Law of the devil chapter 03

Chapter 3 “The Way of Magic”

It didn’t take long for the rumors to spread: the retarded child of the Rowling family made his teacher leave.

People were happy to talk about unfortunate things happening around such a significant person.

It wasn’t all Du Wei’s fault, Earl Raymond also made a mistake when he sent out the quest to find someone capable of making his child talk. Because of that event, Du Wei became the hottest topic of entertainment in the capital.

On this day, the Earl went to see his son again. Unlike his usual visit alone, a man dressed in grey with a pointed hat accompanied the Earl from behind. Skinny fingers and clouded eyes, this new visitor emitted an unpleasant smell of rot and old.

“Mage Clark, this is my son.” The Earl politely spoke: “Can you see if he has any talent in the path of magic, even a little bit?”

If magicians are considered a job, then this job was definitely one of the most prestigious out there. In any place across this world, magicians are a symbol of elitists. They not only have the privileges of the nobility, they also receive the best treatment wherever they transverse for a strong magician can rival a small army during times of war. Due to this reason, any country will want to recruit a magician, not just for their ability, but as a way to mitigate their threat to those in power. A magician spends most of his life in research and meditation to accumulate spiritual energy, as such, nearly all of them lack the desires generally found in the common folk. For this strange circle of people, their biggest goal in life was to seek the truth in magic.

However, the Earl didn’t want his son to become a magician because they are feared by everyone as monsters. They were too logical, too solitary, too weird, and more importantly, they are the type to drown in their research. No woman will like to have a relationship with a monster that wastes away in his laboratory. No nobility will invite a cold magician to their parties. And no king will give a magician political power.

Du Wei was the heir to the Rowling family. He needs to marry, have children, and participate in social engagements of the noble class. Yet what else can he do if he can’t become a warrior or scholar? The path of magic was the only one left.

The Earl led Clark and his son into a concealed room and left the pair alone.

“Listen kid.” Clark takes a little bottle out and pours the golden powder on top of his finger tip. Then drawing a circle around the room, the magician turns to look at Du Wei. “I cast a seal around so no one will be able to hear our conversation. Now tell me kid, what do you think magic is?”

What is magic? Du Wei hesitated at this question. He’s very curious about the magic in this world. After all, there were so many fancy legends about magic in his previous world, but it all revolved around spell chanting and magical trickery.

Seeing how Du Wei remained silent, Clark laughed at himself and thought the question was likely too deep for a kid. “Magic is the power given to humanity by the Goddess. It’s the path for humans to reach the ultimate power, to understand themselves, to understand this world, and to reach the greatest gift left for us humans.”

Clark’s voice sounded sacred, but this did not affect Du Wei’s ability to remain silent and emotionless.

Taking out a crystal ball from under his robe, Clark says: “Spiritual power is used to measure if a person has the talent for magic, although it’s not the only standard, it’s the most important one. Now, let me measure your talent.”

“Spiritual power? Magic power? Aren’t magicians the only one with Magic?” Du Wei finally opened his mouth.

Clark popped his eyes: “Who told you such an outlandish and inaccurate statement? Heck, does the Earl’s home not have a single person with some common sense?”

Mage Clark seems to be angered by this: “Spiritual power is what normal people calls it. We magicians on the other hand call it magic energy. Magicians can use meditation techniques to increase our magic pool. Using our superior spirit, we can then sense this world; sense the secrets of nature and all the energy that dwells within it. Only people with high enough spiritual energy can achieve this. To put it bluntly, magic is the use of techniques to control the energy of nature with one’s spirit.

Du Wei sighs: “I understand then. Spiritual power is magic, and magic is basically a kind of lever. Magicians use this level to borrow the power of nature.”

A hint of surprise sparked from Clark’s murky eye: “Hard to believe this is coming out from a five year old. You are very smart, but why do they call you an idiot?”

Regarding this issue, Du Wei didn’t answer his question and simply stared at the guy in silence. Clark didn’t want to waste his time on such menial matters either and moved on. “Nature contains many elements. Every one of them is a source of power: rain, thunder, blizzard, wind, life and death of plants, and even the movements of the sun and moon. A great magician can sense all the little elements and utilize the energy to his will. Your metaphor with ‘lever’ is interesting. It is as you said. The bigger the lever, the higher amount of energy you can maneuver.”

“So that’s how it is. I thought a magician’s power came from within his body.” Du Wei sighs.

Clark frowns once again: “I have to question, who taught you such nonsense? Even a magic apprentice would know of the stuff I just mentioned. My goddess, I must correct you. A human’s power is limited. No matter how strong you are, there’s a limit. Yet magicians can do what normal people can’t. Why is that? It’s because they can borrow the power of nature. This world was created by the Goddess so technically, magicians are borrowing the power of the Goddess. Remember, humans can’t ever possess power equal to the Goddess. That’s a taboo.”

“I’m curious as to why the Rowling family would have someone like you that lacked so much common sense.  I warn you not to say that power comes from a magician’s body again. If you do, you will be burned in front of the Temple because your words are questioning the Temple’s teaching.”

Closing his mouth, Du Wei’s eye turns hollow again as he lowers his head. This maneuver of his perfectly masked his current expression.
