Law of the devil chapter 209 part 2

Chapter 209 “Afraid of change!” (part two)

Just when Vivian was about to struggle, something about Du Wei’s tone of speech changed her mind. Squinting her eyes, Vivian’s small hands cautiously reached for Du Wei’s forehead: “You-you have a fever?” She asked timidly with a spec of worry in her voice.

Without hesitating, Du Wei grabbed hold of our girl’s hand and gave it a peck with his lips: “Nonsense, I don’t get sick.”

Knowing she was kissed, Vivian’s face blushed with embarrassment.

It would seems no matter how problematic his issues are, all would be flushed away when facing our frightened little rabbit: “I ask you, was the words from last night in your drunken state true?”

Trembling, the first reaction she had was to shake her head; however, she quickly finished it off with a small nod after hesitating for a bit.

“Really?”

This time, she finally gave a full nod.

Du Wei cried out a laugh. Holding her in his arms, Du Wei softly says: “My sweetheart, you’re finally grown up.”

Vivian grievously objected: “You….. I’m bigger than you…… “

Surprised at her words, Du Wei lets out a long laugh as he shook his head: “Vivian, you’re wrong, I’m much older than you.”

Then he lay down on the bed. Sighing, he then said: “I’m a little depressed today, so please, stay here for the evening and have a chat with me, alright?”

Vivian instinctively wanted to answer with a yes because it had already become a habit. However, seeing how late it was already and the fact that it is only him and her inside the room…. She’s not stupid! A man and a woman on a bed in the middle of the night, even she knows such a thing is inappropriate.

Picking up on the girl’s worry, Du Wei couldn’t stop himself from teasing: “Did you not say you wanted to sleep with me last night?”

“No…… No……” Vivian started to panic. In the end, she can only choke out a few words: “Not….. Not now…..”

“Don’t worry; I won’t really eat you up now.” Pulling Vivian to him, Du Wei had the little maiden wrapped in his arms with her head against his chest. Though she wasn’t as breathtakingly beautiful as the Marquise sisters, but there’s a strange comfort to be had in her existence.

Like……

He had no other needs in this world.

Oddly enough, a person’s mind is funny like this. The once complicated problem plaguing him earlier just became moot and it was unnecessary to overthink the issue!

Embracing Vivian, he suddenly muttered these words without even thinking it over: this is the kind of woman I want!

Sometimes, things are just that simple.

Losing himself for a moment, Du Wei suddenly found himself being knocked back to reality due to the itch on his nose – this is caused by Vivian’s hair. Sneezing, he shook head out of habit and instinctively reached out for something to wipe his nose. In seconds, his hand fell upon something small and soft while being infused with a faint aroma. Giving his face a good wipe, he opened his eyes to have a clear look at the unfamiliar object in his hand……

Both Du Wei And Vivian  became dumbfounded.

This thing is obviously a little girl’s panty, pink and cute!

Needless to say, this obviously our heroin’s undergarment. Unlike the hesitating expression on Du Wei, our panicking girl was already trying to take back what is hers like someone catching a thief. Nevertheless, as much as she tried, Du Wei already pocketed the booty before she can get her hands on it.

Flushing a beat red face, Vivian begs: “Give-give it back.”

Du Wei shakes his head: “Finders keepers.”
“Give-give me…… I beg of you. I-I was just taking a shower and left it here……” Vivian’s eye becomes watery.

Du Wei smiles with great enjoyment: “I’ll keep it for now. When you become my wife, I’ll give you ten instead.”

With that, Du Wei suddenly leaped up from the bed and sneaked a kiss on Vivian’s lip. With a happy smile on his face, he ran off without stopping.

By next morning, Du Wei’s mood was much more relaxed.

Humph, who am I?

I am Du Wei!

Madam Lister, don’t think you can catch a big fish like me so easily!

You want to play with me?

Fine, let’s see if you are capable enough!

Making up his mind, Du Wei knows he cannot so openly reject them, thus, a “stalling” tactic must be used. Anyways, his age is still young; he’s in no hurry to marry.

The beauty of this Marquise is indeed very exciting to the point where she is considered a disaster to those around them, but……. Isn’t she just a woman? That’s still not enough to make our little devil here fall heads over heel for her.

After two days of rest, the nice times for our Hogwart students have finally come to an end. Waking up early that day, he immediately went to meet the two teachers sent along to oversee the kids – they are Old Alley’s disciple. Since they are old acquaintances anyways, Du Wei did not bother hiding his intent, likewise, the two seniors made it clear they intend to follow through with Du Wei’s arrangements.

“In that case, I won’t be so formal.” Du Wei said this with a genuine smile: “My plans are very simple. I’ll first take the students with me while both of you rest at the castle. If you are interested, you can freely look around. After a few days, I will bring them back.”

Du Wei’s style may be a bit bossy, but these two seniors’ disciples of Old Alley happily agreed to his arrangement. To them, it just means a baggage is lifted off their shoulders and they can finally do what they want.

Without stalling, Du Wei immediately sent for General Longbottom and the twenty eight students. Together, he had them all moved into the military camp outside the city.

In addition, he also had someone prepare a change of clothing for him while he himself picked up some magic items in preparation of joining the others in the camp. Thinking it over, he thought it was for the best if he met with the Marquise family before going. Only problem is that when he went to the sisters place, he was told by the servants that Miss Angel and the Marquise was unwell and could not meet him. Unfortunately, it was the hateful boy Muse that came out to greet him.

With a dark and unwilling face, Muse said: “Why did you come? Because of you, my sisters not only cried all night, they also argued! I’ve never once seen them so heated. It’s all because of you that they fought!”

Just knowing this is giving him a headache because one is love struck teenage girl and the other is a strong willed woman. Being stuck in-between the two is something he does not wish for and not something he can solve.

Whatever, it’s better not to meet. If he did, it would be more bothersome.

To make it quick, he made up an excuse of having urgent matters outside the city. Not knowing when he will return, he gave his parting message that he is sorry for not being able to personally send her Ladyship off. However, just when he was about to leave with his back turn already, the snobby brat cut him off by running in front of him: “Wait!!”

Frowning, Du Wei eyes the kid.

“You need to go out?” An idea shifts across Muse’s childish blue eyes: “Perfect, since I don’t know how to solve my sister’s argument anyways, I might as well go out since I’m here to learn from you!”

Du Wei smile became somewhat crooked: “But the things I have not only poses a certain level of risk, it also requires long periods of travel on horseback. I fear you might not be able to endure such pains.”

Muse immediately became angry: “How do you know I can’t endure it! I’m telling you now; I can already wield the sword at the tender age of eight! Then I was able to ride at ten! Don’t look down at me. In terms of riding skills, you may not be above me!”

Du Wei sighs as he gave the kid a look: “Fine then. It’s not like its anything even if you tag along, but….. If you can’t keep up and get kicked back here, don’t blame me.”

With that, he glanced at the room upstairs: “Go back and pack some clothing for yourself. On this trip, we will be out for at least ten days or more!”

“Humph! Though you look like a man, but your attitude is too naggy. What is there to pack? With the clothing on me and my trusty sword, I can go anywhere! Don’t take my for those fragile rich kids!” Muse taps the sword on his waist.

Inwardly, Du Wei was thinking: you make it sound nice now, but if you fall behind on the road, I’ll simply send you back with someone.

With more than 10 guards and Old Smoke by his side – they are the odd talents recruited by Longbottom – Du Wei was just about to announce their departure when this snobby Muse went ahead without his permission.

“Humph, kid.” Du Wei curls his lips in dissatisfaction.

He did not know this but when he rode out of the gate, two eyes were gazing down at him from the castle’s window.

Pale and full of sadness in her eyes, Angel stayed like this until Du Wei’s back could no longer be seen. Biting her lips, she then turns to face the Marquise standing at her side.

Like her, the Marquise look tired as she sighed: “Angel, you still can’t come to terms with it?”

“Sister!!” Angel suddenly exclaimed: “I just don’t get it!”

She raised her hand to point at the Marquise: “You know I like him! So why, why did you do such a thing like proposing to him!!”

“Angel…..” The Marquise eyed her sister a sense of determination: “You think I’m stealing your lover? My sister! I originally wanted you to be with him too….. Our family may appear to be thriving right now, but even you should be able to figure out our family’s biggest weakness. And he, this man, is the key to our family’s future! This is precisely the reason why I sent you to the Northwest….. My sister, you must understand. Men likes the opposite sex, but that doesn’t mean all men will be hypnotized by the beauties before their eyes!”

Angel was silent, but she was still hatefully staring at her sister.

“Angel……” The Marquise sighs as she slowly walked over to gently hug her beloved sister: “Although I did not have much interaction with him, but I can tell you cannot tie his heart down, you understand? You must believe me, I’ve never been wrong in judging people. I’ve always to taught you that you must learn what a man wants. Some likes women, some likes power, and this guy…. Even I don’t know what he wants. This guy is not right for you…. From his words alone, I can see he is not the type to be soft hearted against a woman……”

After a pause, she whispers, “You know what? I heard he was gifted a group of quadruplet, trained and skilled in the art of seduction. Despite their many merits, this guy simply tossed the girls into his store and never bothered with them…. And I even heard because the girls disobeyed him, he mercilessly whipped the sisters. He’s dangerous ….. So please understand me, I did this to protect you!”

“All you ever think about is the family, always for the family!” Angel suddenly shouted.

PACKKK!

A resounding slap landed on our delicate Angel’s face. With a pained expression, the Marquise looked at her foolish sister: “Don’t forget, both you and I are a member of this family! You may hate me now, but let me ask you….. Since you have no way to get him to like you, then what other choice do I have other than sacrificing myself?”

After a pause, the Marquise whispers, “Don’t forget, Muse is already 15 years old! How long do you think we can hide the matter? There are many people eyeing our family’s wealth! Some would be more than happy to swallow even our bones if they can….. We don’t have much time left!”

Just as Du Wei arrived with his students at the military base camp outside Loulan City, a lone knight on horseback slowly came before the city gates. From top to bottom, he had battle scars all over the place like he just experienced some kind of unimaginable storm! Even from afar, the garrison soldiers can smell the scent of blood permeating from this mysterious knight.

Subconsciously, every soldier at the gate had their alerts raised at this blue haired one eyed knight. Despite the determination on the knight’s face, it could not hide the fatigue caused by the injuries on the body. In fact, the wobbly fashion he sat there atop of his mount looked like he would fall at any moment.

Just as the soldiers were about to stop the knight in his tract, this mysterious person took the lead and pulled out a badge from his clothing. Surprising everyone, it was the symbol of the Duke’s manor!

Not only did they not dare block the road, the soldiers even sent a messenger ahead to bring the news to the Duke’s castle.

The mysterious knight is in fact Hussein!

Who knows what happened to be able to delay our Saint Knight from returning, but not only was he injured all over the place, even his armor was near the breaking point with cracks everywhere. If not for his Saint Dou Qi suppressing his wounds, it’s likely Hussein would never have been able to make the long journey back!

For example: the most serious wound was on his right shoulder! From the way the wound appears, it’s likely pierced by a violent force. Even under the protection of the Saint Dou Qi, this opponent was able to deal such a devastating blow; clearly this enemy was exceptionally strong. If not for such a powerful interface lingering inside his body, Hussein would have already mended his wounds.

Like Hussein, his horse is also exhausted from the long trek back. Only by reaching the vicinity of Loulan City did he breathe out a sigh of relief. Nevertheless, despite his perseverance, Hussein could no longer keep his body upright after reaching the castle’s bridge. Slanting on one side, he fell down from his mount, thus, causing quite the stir among the palace guards.

The security forces originally thought it was an enemy attack so their awareness were suddenly raised to the maximum. However, when they realized it was Hussein, they quickly brought our Saint Knight inside without hesitation.

Soon after Hussein was carried into the Castle, Marde was quickly called upon because our Duke was not present at the moment. With just a glance, Marde began to exclaim in shock: Oh god! How did he get so seriously injured! Fast! Send for the Duke in the military camp and have the temple’s clerics come over now! We need their healing abilities!”

Originally in a coma already, Hussein suddenly woke up and grabbed hold of Marde’s arm. In a husky voice, he said: “Don’t call the temple.”

Stunned at the request, Marde nevertheless agrees to the request because he’s already used to the odd balls working under the young master.

“Have someone…… Carry me to the greenhouse, fast!”

Hussein’s breathe rapidly increases as the veins on his forehead pops up.

Hurrying two servants over, Marde had Hussein carried over to the Greenhouse and ordered some people to stand guard outside.

Du Wei had secretly placed a bunch of magic potions and ingredients in a location within the greenhouse. Among the many things there, one of the stuff is the ice berries. This narcotic like fruit may have been abused by the wealthy class, but there’s no denying it’s a great anesthetic for pain.

Barely able to support himself, Hussein forced down a bit of the ice berry along with some other medical potions. Through the relieving and rejuvenating effects of the magical plants and potions, his body finally regained some of the golden luster unique to that of a Saint level warrior like Hussein.

Enduring the pain, Hussein suddenly did something no normal man could possibly do on their own. Towards his right shoulder bones where the severe wound was located, he once again fractured it with his bare hands. Under the fierce burning light of his golden Dou Qi, the gruesome sight of his reopened wound sealed itself off at a rapid pace. Normally, not even Hussein should be able to endure such excruciating pain, but thanks to the numbing ice berry he partook, the pain became a lot easier to bear.

Right now, our Saint Knight is a ragged and tattered as one can be. His side still had a sword hanging there, but the blade had long been shattered with mostly only the hilt left. Then there is his hair. Stained red, the usually glossy blue hair is now clustered into bands of lumps due to the viscious blood.

Waiting till his bones were regrown, Hussein slightly sighs out in relief as he sat up. With his legs crossed, he then reached for his bag and opened it up…..

Inside, there is a sword radiating an awe-inspiring chill like that of the winter chill!

If Du Wei were here to see this sword, he will most certainly be surprised!

The reason is because this sword in Hussein’s hand is none other than the famed sword wielded by Rodriguez “Beauty under the Moonlight”!!!

However, why is this legendary weapon possessed by Hussein?

  1. Wow. Hussien is such a beast, he just went on an errand and took down another saint knight and took his sacred sword on the way. GG.

    1. Politics is like a game. Whoever shows their true colors loses. The Marquis wasn’t honest with Du Wei. So why should he be so righteous with her. She is trying to manipulate the situation. Du Wei will have none of it. Angel truly loves Du Wei, and I sympathize with her. But the Marquis is a calculating bitch.

      1. Except he needs a calculating bitch, and he knows it, her politcal savvy alone is worth the plunge.
That’s a point in her favour.

        1. Du Wei needs someone like the Marquis, but will she do what’s best for him or for her family and herself? If the Marquis loved Du Wei, then I’m all for it. But she feels it’s a sacrifice. Du Wei doesn’t want a political marriage, but a love marriage.

        2. Yes he needs talented people, but that doesn’t mean he has to marry her. I agree with baselman1974, if there was a moment when Marquise would gain more by betraying Du Wei she would do so without hesitation.

            1. You know that makes much more sense than what I just said, if marquise marries Duwei she could also be seen as of Duwei’s side when the time comes

              1. If Marquise marries him (getting the Duke title), and then kills him, she still will be Duke. Isn’t it obvious ?

                1. not really will be a duke, remember her title is marquis, but its not hereditary, because her husband died,

so if duwei died, then the duke/duchess title will also ends with her, and wont be hereditary…….

            2. Yeah, because a tragedic accident during experiment or a ‘disease’ (poison) can’t be arranged at all if you can get a hereditiary title from that…

              1. I’m not saying “accidents” can’t happen, but it’d be unlikely.

She doesn’t need to marry him for his money, and also, it wouldn’t look good for her if another husband died.

She’s trying to be his wife to unite their families, and is basically just joining his side.

        3. We all know there will come a time when Duwei will be seen as a public enemy, this chapter left clear that the marquise don’t really like him, she is even “sacrificing” herself by proposing him, I don’t know if the Listers will stand by his side when the time comes, at least not after this chapter.

          1. Well, Angel might be faithful and supportive, because she seemingly ‘loves him’, but we all know it’s infatuation and to love a person you have to get to know him. That is why I rather ship Vivian as she knows what she is getting in, than someone who can become a wild card. As for Marquise I am pretty sure she will betray him when she gets something better than he can provide or he will give more problems than profits to her familly. Also their dumb brother would be the first to stick a knife in Du Wei’s back.

      2. you are so naive…

the Marquise finds Du Wei interesting.

but normally she wouldn’t want to marry him (maybe take him as a lover ??… but then she’ll become a pedophile cougar…)(remember, she is 30+, and Du Wei is 15 !!! even if she were in love, she wouldn’t, normaly, be able to pursue him… ergo, she wouldn’t even allow herself any naive feeling.
anyway, the marquise, with the responsabilities she has, will never have the freedom to develop such feelings… unless she unexpectedly marry Du Wei;.. 🙂 )

Both Du Wei and the Marquise know that the main element of the proposal is the situation of the Marquise’ family. None is duped.

If the Marquise is a calculating bitch, then Du Wei is a calculating Bastard…

he can take his own emotions into account more than the marquise due to 2 facts:
        -he is male
-he has an hereditary title (and the marquise only has a non-hereditary title).

        and you”re only hlaf right.

in this world, politics is a game… with deadly response.

the Marquise is not doing that for “points”… but to not have he family die in misery.

as a side note, the Marquise could make a good MC.

        1. You are right. Just remember Du Wei did tell the Marquise he liked Vivian. He was being honest. The Marquise isn’t totally upfront about why she wants Du Wei to marry in the family.

At first the Marquise tried to use Angel to rope him in. Now she used herself. Come on. It would make any smart man leery of the situation.

          1. Not really. He’s in a position where most families would want to have their daughter marry him and be connected with their family.

And it is a mutual benefit….

He knows very well it was a political marriage.

In fact, if you think about it, the idea of marrying for love is kinda a new one really… something more modern.

While a few stories would have 2 people in love marrying each other, for the most part, marriage had little to do with love (which was why the Disney movies famously have princesses marrying guys they don’t know -though Disney tried to rectify some of it with some “true love” bs).

Though… I think the author is forgetting Du Wei’s ability to actually control females….

        2. Do not be naive, it is another world, another rules 15 is an adulthood age. Middle ages. No one knows such a word as a paedophile.

25 years ago children of USSR were considered adults at age 16.
100 years ago everywhere in the Asia girls and boys 12-14 years old have been already married. Everywhere in the world children from 8 years old have been used as a work power.

Just now somewhere in Africa girls are married at 12-14 years old.

Civilization is what protects the children and shifts their adulthood to later age.

However I do not believe that 15 year boys require protection from sex with 30 years old women. It is so ridiculous. I remember my self at my 15 …

          1. sorry… he has his “coming of age ceremony”… so it’s like a 36yo chasing after a 18yo … double the majority age woman chase after a guy that just reached adulthood…
            it’s not much better
(and I’m not talking about protection against the sex… but about the image… especialy in a patriarchal society)

            1. This is kinda a Christian sanctimony ? Women even at 36 are still at their best age. What a difference it make if they find each another attractive ?

Using one for its own egoistic purpose is totally bad. Manipulation and misuse of ones trust is bad.

And of course we do not forget that Du Wei is mentally far above the level of 15 years old boy. So he is not naive and he understands what the f.ck this women want from him. It seems he would not like to be a puppet.

Actually I do not understand why the hell this discussion taking a place here, where we read about fantasy medieval world …

There are different rules. Just read about rules those were in our world in different countries 200 years ago.

              1. yes but your “Using one for its own egoistic purpose is totally bad. Manipulation and misuse of ones trust is bad. ” is also purely rules of our world… and not of that medieval fantasy world…

                1. Its common. And does not matter what world do you leave, and what rules and customs are acceptable. Those two will be considered “bad”, on a personal level by everyone.

    1. I thought so too, but there is always a possibility that someone would want to marry his/her daughter to him, make a kid and kill him, thus gaining all the assets. After all he doesn’t have a way to refuse like Marquise.

      1. There are also the possibilities of Muse being: 1. A shemale 2. Gay 3. Impotent 4. Someone with medical condition

    1. Marquise is a vicious snake under the guise of beautiful woman. She would sell him in the first moment she would gain a better deal. Also the thing is she would be a legal wife and not a concubine, thus her descendants would gain everything Du Wei has, and that would go to strengthen her Lisner familly.

Btw. it’s bitch move to bitch about someone elses love life.

      1. Ya, but it’s a political marriage and it isn’t like she’s hiding that.

In fact, him actually marrying for love is kinda weird if you think about it for the time period.

It shows DU Wei being from our modern Earth…

        1. Yes it’s not weird, but that doesn’t mean that he has to be ok with that. It’s like going to a country where women are treated badly because of it’s culture. You can’t change that, but it’s not like you have to do as Romans do

          1. Except that doesn’t necessarily make political marriages bad. Sure, they don’t usually start from love, but frankly, look at how many that start with love fail.

In the end, they can learn to get along, so marrying without love isn’t an issue. In fact, many arranged marriages don’t often have love during the beginning of the marriage, but that doesn’t mean they don’t work out (my parents and grandparents are an example).

  2. Chara chara development maybe? No? Well, i the likes Vivian, I won’t object xD
More importantly, when will our Du Wei whoop those Listers?
    Thanks for the chapter!

  3. Well. Damn. Hussein… Damn. Too awesome. And the marquise too. Such ruthless woman. Wonderful. DuWei should grab her and make her loyal 100% to him.

    1. Well he has ‘The Eye’ and if she tries to get in his way then I don’t have any objections with using his power

  4. uoo… I hopes Duwei comes back fast.. it’ll be trouble if the two sisters meet Hussein. They’ll know Hussein identity and hopefully the madam won’t doing something like blackmailing duwei to marry her. You know by telling the church that duwei protecting Husein. that’ll be bad.

    thank you!

  5. Meatbun delivery~
Thank you for the chapter ( ?w?)

Muse without a bath for 10 days?! …he’ll definitely regret it..
Though he’ll probably be hypnotized by the end of the journey..

    1. “Isn’t she just a woman? That’s still not enough to make our little devil here fall heads over heel for her.”

You admit she’s a woman and have power to control women. Why not control her? Make her fall for him and take all their wealth.

  6. Auuw Duwei and his innocent love for vivian is so cute. Vivian is the only woman that can keep Duwei head cool. That is true love by my definition. They totally different. Duwei is smart and mean but vivian is slow and innocent thus even so they kinda weirdly together but they do compliment each other and keep eech other grounded.

  7. “the soldiers even sent a massager ahead to bring the news” massager -> messenger
Was expecting politics and got a cliffhanger. Nice.
    Thanks for the chapter

  8. So musexduwei ship?
At this point everyone is better than vivían because you cant deny that the whole room scene was puré cliché bullshit, pink panties really?
Back to ship muse wasnt a very manly name from thre start…

  9. I have the sneaking suspicion that Muse is actually Musette. If this is true, there is still hope that Du Wei will not end up with Vivian, or at the least that Vivian won’t be the sole saddler. The Du Wei – Vivian ship is just irritating me more and more every chapter. Not only is she a horrible choice from every perspective, now the author is even giving us Taco Cheese lovey-dovey scenes that are positively nauseating.

    1. Thank you. I thought I was the only one who found Vivian character a cliche and waste of space. We do want more female characters but when we get Vivians. I rather have none. I personally hate the whole”innocent pure” bullshit female characters that Asian media love.
The Marquise, Rolynn the female Knight and Joanna are more fleshed out and better characters.
Most readers seem to be hypocrites. Marquise is essentially a female Du Wei. When the male character does it, it is considered smart when a female does the same, she is an evil bitch.
I remember Du Wei almost stabbing the current Regent. He is that much of an asshole but it makes him realistic

      1. She doesn’t have the public because she is not Duwei, she is not our MC, is not hypocritical, just every other character who behaves like the marquise, character “whose got the brain” like the regent, Bohan, northwest army head, the pope, earl Raymond and Aragon, I don’t see anyone supporting those guys, because they are not the MC and with the marquise is not different, and people doesn’t only react to the character personality but her actions and statements towards Duwei, and this chapter puts the Lister in an awkward spot for us readers. And I don’t think asshole is the correct term to judge Duwei’s thoughts in that situation, although he is no good anyway. If you ask me about Vivian I don’t really give a fuck about who MC wants to sleep with but I kinda, and mean really kinda understand why he would not go with sexy WILF route, but don’t ask me about that I’m not sure and I like to go with the thought about Duwei just liking her, because yes, even if she is socially and some will argue ‘mentaly’ retarded doesn’t really mean shit if you think about.

        1. Is not the main character? Thats a pretty poor argument. Lol
I was making a valid point DuWei was actually planning to betray someone he allied with for his family.
In the Marquise case some are assuming/forecasting(for lack of a better word) that she might do the same.
If the main character does it and its fine then other characters should be able to do it and it should be fine too.
I reread your post. Honestly the backlash for the Marquise is more miso..sexist than anything but I will correct you, I saw a some support for the Marquise. And you say actions, her betrayal was never implied by her only by comments here. Although when a father can betray his own son, I dont blame the commenters for implying she will.
Honestly you made my point : your “he is the MC” response
          That exemplifies bias.
Thank you though for making me re-evaluate the characters here. I had missed some things. Bohan is one of my favorite characters hopefully he gets more screen time. He is male so it is very likely

          1. No… if you are comparing a character being male or female, then it is not fair, because for some reason idk there seems to be some kind entity by MC’s side for some reason, yeah probably author and I think normally authors really like their MC and want them to win normally, at least most of the time is like that, there is bias because he is MC lol, and that is normal, look I’m gonna tell you a secret, Duwei is defeating them all, yeah, somehow he always comes to the winning side, and don’t act like that please, some people say thst marquise is a manipulative bitch, but not many recognize the rest aren’t so much different, females might be a manipulative bitch then males might as well be manipulative bastards or if you wanna keep it animal then dogs or foxes, altho I do agree with you on some characters like female knight being nowhere to be seen, but I guess we’ll see her being more relevant in the future, because thats all we can do lmao.

            1. Btw my brain set the record but my fingers chose not to follow, at the beginning I meant comparing whatever character being female or male to MC is not fair, MC is literally (more like metaphorically) God’s/Author’s son, MC can be female and it would still be the same case.

      2. Indeed. I’m currently working on (or trying to) writing a story that reflects more realistic characters. Somewhat of a similar setting to Lord of the Rings, but with some xuanhuan elements. I’m looking specifically to go into politics, economics, intrigue and governance later on in the story. I find characters far more believable when they have a darker side to them, like most humans do, a “me before anyone else” element to them, even if it is only subtly. Because absolutely no person is completely, one hundred percent altruistic, and if they act as such, they are usually actively repressing their normal human nature.

I studied creative writing in my first year at university, and one of the character types we were encouraged to avoid at all costs, were the one dimensional, super-idealistic, naive characters that are, unfortunately, omni-present in eastern literature and screenplay. Vivian being a prime example of such a character. They offer very little to interest the reader, and almost no new or intriguing ways of developing the story.

Such characters almost invariable become damsels-in-distress. Now I’m far from being a feminist (really, really far), but I am a writer, and one thing I really hate is when authors create characters that are, objects (again, Vivian being the perfect example, though many anime protagonists tend to be objects as well, which pisses me off just as much). Vivian has absolutely no agency, besides her drunken outburst, I haven’t seen her act with any agency, and it reflects badly that she needs to be piss drunk before she can do anything.

The Marquise on the other hand would be a great choice, she has a far more interesting and agentric personality than Vivian, one which is far more realistic, especially for a woman who grew up and lives on the social setting this novel plays out in, and she also offers several interesting possibilities for developing the story. Personally I’d go for Angel, as an author, because she is more age appropriate for Du Wei’s current-life character (he should be about 15).

Now if Muse turns out to be a girl, I would change my first choice to her. She comes with the same intrigue possibilities, since her elder sister is attached to the deal, she is the same age as Du Wei, and she has demonstrated a self-reliance, and an ability to antagonise Du Wei on matters she feels are important (so far mostly her sisters). On top of that she has, apparently, some skill with the sword, and presumably some on riding as well, allowing her to break from the lady-of-the-court archetype typical of novels that play out in this medieval / early gunpowder era.

        1. Yeah it is an issue I find myself more than I would like too, but Vivian just doesn’t tick me off because I think her problem as a character is the lack exposure as character and the novel in general gives me this feeling this is gonna last a while, so I’m just waiting for that exposure which will bring forth some real development, the island could’ve been a nice chance but author had other ideas for the place, now I don’t really have a problem with Vivian because firstly because I’ve read too many fics in which harem was present, so deep inside I just know he is snatching them all (jk)… then about Vivian as a character I think about real life, if you wanna compare an under developed character like Vivian to a real person you would be surprised to find out those people do exist, obviously not like like Vivian but fairly close, people socially under developed for one side, or even just plain dumb, but whatever circumsntances may be, life moves forward, and they may learn, grow up, move forward x2, whatever, changing along the way, you’re not a shame or bad because you don’t know something but you can be great if you do, and you can, thats why it ain’t a sin writing stupid, or under developed, or plain simple characters, because they can grow, either that is getting smarter, self-confident, etc. The real sin would be making characters like Vivian with the same circumstances and keep them the same for the rest of the story (considering the time span in which takes place), like I said in one of my other comments, she is now finally out there in real life, only now, so her story begins now (we hope), in other words I don’t consider it a fuck up now but if it stays the same in the future then that would be sad, and we would end up being a bunch of sad boys and girls.

          1. Again, I too don’t have a problem with naive characters on principle. My issue is that we’ve known her for upwards of a hundred and eighty chapters, in which she has appeared in what, about thirty? In those thirty chapters, there has been absolutely no characterisation, besides her naivete, clumsiness, and utter lack of agency. Now compare that with other characters like Muse. We’ve known him/her for about 9 chapters, or less, and already he has been better characterised.

Xianxia, Wuxia and Xuanhuan authors (the last of which I believe out author here falls under), have never been known for doing much in the way of character development. The way a character is after the first encounter, for the greater majority of cases, is the way they will be for the rest of the story. Given that we’ve known Vivian for pretty much the whole story, and we haven’t seen any development from her, I am inclined to make the statistical statement that we won’t be getting any character development from her.

And as she is now, she’s no worthwhile character at all.

            1. Lets hope then, and be thankful we are not one of those who mention pedophilia, I mean those guys have it rough, after all this is reincarnation genre, I mean this is no surprise at least for those works in which reincarnated starts from zero, but idk if I wanna explore that part of the genrt, well, and btw what you’re writting, hope you reach whatever is the approach you’re aiming for, so good luck.

              1. Thank you for the well wishes. As far as paedophilia goes, I’m very careful to call this paedophilia. I have psychology as an extra subject, and if you look at this from a cognitive perspective, it couldn’t possibly be. Our minds, and psyches, are generated by our brains, through the neural impulses that fire off and travel along our neural pathways. His brain is that of a fifteen year old, so, though he has memories from his previous life, he is still just a fifteen year old.

Now people will argue the soul, the soul… But doesn’t the whole reincarnation logic work by essentially scrubbing the soul clean of the dirt that is the previous life? If we’re really going to argue reincarnation and that the carry-over of the soul means he isn’t actually just 15 years old, then technically Vivian/Angel/Muse aren’t the ages they are portrayed as either, since their soul, though scrubbed clean of their previous lives (to continue the analogy), are still much older than their current bodies.

No matter what which way you look at this, it isn’t paedophilia. And even so, it’s literature. I’m very careful to start arguing morality from an external perspective. To do that is to commit the same fallacy as pushing our modern morality onto figures of the past. Morality isn’t something intrinsic, for the most part morals are learned and taught, as such if it is considered moral by society to hold slaves, you cannot say someone who owned slaves was immoral, since you are making your judgement based on your own learned morality. By that logic those very same figures you just criticised can say you are immoral for letting woman govern countries, or work, etc.

But that’s just my thought on the matter. If I think something will make a good driver for a story, and would make sense within the context of the fictional world the story plays out in, I would write it, whether it is moral by real life standards or not. Because our standards of morality are completely irrelevant to fictional characters in their fictional world.

This is a common problem I see with many readers: the inability to put our own subjective views aside and try to understand the world from the characters’ perspectives where appropriate. And to the same extent, be able to put the characters’ perspectives aside when we are talking from a narrative standpoint.

                1. I agree, I did not have that much of an opinion on it, more like I did not want to, although I’ve always had my own ideas about reincarnation, but I think it is as you say, even more so if you go back to the beginning and Duwei’s feelings in his first years and his relationship his mother and later his father and brother kind off follows suit.

And yes, I don’t really know how could I’ve forgotten about Lolita, a critically aclaimed masterpiece of literature, and that is enough back up.

  10. After this if I did not expect . Hussein killing another holy knight . The lister Miss , I should not believe the first words . Women are like snakes and then speak for men. But forget that corrupt lived there until she can not

  11. Hussein, what a fucking boss jesus, the fact that it all happened off-screen makes it more amazing for some reason, like yeah just killing another saint warrior, just Hussein stuff, no big

  12. Wow way to go du wei…..glad to know ur balls have shrunk even further….i mean hell isnt every mans dream wife a……dumb naive stuttering cant hardly walk with out falling blushing invilid thats barely able to speak its mind!! Oh hell yes sign me up…if i wanted nothing more then a moaning fleshlight……

The lister family is definitely calculating…..but….he has power over females throught his eyes if i remember correctly……that right there makes them perfect….once tamed the lister family would be nothing but a golden goose for him when he needs one the most….im sure glad the author has spent so many chapters telling us how smart du wei is……otherwise with this development id be bordering on feeling pissed…..specially with his little rant of hmph hmph hmph i wont be manipulated so ill just run away for 2 weeks……i mean hell nothing says im a man of action filled with decisiveness like running away and giving no replies

    1. Haha Vivian is not innocent in my opinion she is mentally a child and it feels like pedophilia so I have been skipping their interactions for the past 50 chapters or so
And friend you hit the nail on the head. Vivian is a joke of a character. And yeah authors can be contradictory. I hope he isn’t running away like you said lol. I was hoping for more powerful female characters like Joanna to have more screen time but if we will all be getting Vivians, I rather pretend women don’t exist. Nameless whores are better in this situation.
Anyone noticed how the female knight has leveled up in a year?
What a joke. No point in introducing female characters with seemingly relevant back stories if you will leave them underdeveloped

  13. Enough with the pedophilic tendencies already , this author geez , the story is pretty cool to read but when all this nonesense with the pedoMC and all the chiches coming right at you one after another , i realy wish if we could get a spoiler from bcat, is he going to end up with that child? can you please spoil me? @BCAT00

  14. Haha I forgot the most important thing: setting. This is not a literature class but a fan community. Critique holds no value here lol.
    I apologize

    1. critique holds no value on internet but if you want to talk about literature and how a story should be told you are free to do that, besides Im planning the creation of a “we hate vivian” club so maybe those asian bastards someday may learn that they will look like amateurs if they use unidimensional and plain characters including: the loli, the op mc, the busty heroine, the generic bad guy, the generic good guy, the neverending sister-brother incestous relationship, the overused harem, the mc with the harem who is virgin, the mc with harem who is psychotic sexual maniac, the dense mc who couldnt catch the message even if the girl strips and open his legs, the not so popular trap(my favorite im bi) the yandere, the tsundere, the mc friend who cant be better than him, the disgusting fatso, the rapist mob, the black guy who likes to show his muscles(being black is optional) the hot childhood friend, the retarded/autistic/incapable(it may be combined with others), all this spiced with “I don’t have fking idea how to write a proper plot”.
      cheers! did I miss something?

      1. Haha I read recently how you usually get a we hate insert female character in media. Especially female vilains but male villains are loved. Sometimes such communities are created by the production team of the media. The old guy at the helm of Star Trek TV series was infamously misogynistic. But in this case I think it’s very deserved. I want to join the club haha

  15. Oh god so many wills in the comments ( I will try not make one myself 😛 ), I stopped half way, but from what I did read, two things got my attention :

    – The 1st one – the “realism” of Du Wei’s world regarding the types of marriage > come on guys ! This is a fantasy novel that happens in a fantasy world so what is the point of comparing it with our reality? None at all, our concepts of normal, our rules can’t be applied here. So just keep in mind that everything can happen in the story ^^,

    – The 2nd one – all kind of questions involving the Marquise…is she the best choice to Du Wei? Is she an evil character and can she be the female counterpart of Du Wei? In my humble opinion, she isn’t the best choice to Du Wei, she is to concerned about her own family so probably she would betray Du Wei if it was to save her family status. Du Wei needs someone that can be trusted at his side so she is out of the picture, but even so I don’t think she is an evil character, she is only doing what she thinks is best for her and her family, she’s acting according to her beliefs just like everyone, including Du Wei himself. She is not a perfect counterpart of Du Wei but her personality and her behavior in some way can be similar to him. Actually that’s another reason why I don’t think their marriage would be an advantage to Du Wei, since the both are manipulative and calculative, it would be a dangerous game to him if he tied himself to the Marquise.

  16. I don’t understand this hate against the marquise. I saw some comments that she is manipulating Du Wei, like are we reading the same novel? She clearly stated that this marriage is political and that in return for merging her family with Du Wei’s he would get their support in return, so a fair deal. Then there are the comments that she would stab him in the back to help her family like wtf her family would be his family if she takes the name, hereditary titles can only get inherited by children and not spouses if he died it would be the same as now she would be a Duchess but after her death the title would be revoked so there is no point in killing him actually she should make sure he doesn’t die. Besides the reasons he has the eyes so her loyalty is assured. Then there is the question of love the most pointless question in this situation like he doesn’t have to love her its a deal like partners in business. Now for the “sacrifice” to be fair if I was a 30+ woman I wouldn’t be too thrilled to marry a 15 year old boy either but its not like she dislikes him. The way she went about it is perhaps a bit underhanded but its not like he looses anything and gains so much and besides what do you expect from her to get on her knees and beg him to save her family? This whole situation is a badly thought out way for the MC to prove his love for the autistic decoration aka Vivian(because lets face it she is useless like she does literally nothing a tier 8 mage that cant mage at all)which is beyond me, she is a pet or a mascot at best and the worst possible choice for a romantic interest. I at least hope the author fleshes her out a bit more that a useless comic relief(btw who the fuck makes the comic relief character the main romantic interest).
