“Help me…”

Lu Chao Chao clutched her behind, her face twisted in agony as she wailed miserably.

“You’ve sneaked out again… Your ears must be filled with wind when I speak!” Madam Xu scolded, brandishing a feather duster like a seasoned warrior.

With her hands still shielding her tender backside, Lu Chao Chao scrambled away in complete disarray.

(Oh, this woman is a force to be reckoned with. Not even a god’s backside could escape her fury.)

At that moment, the Crown Prince appeared. Lu Chao Chao quickly took refuge behind him, cheekily sticking her tongue out at Madam Xu.

“Crown Prince Brother, pwease save me…” she implored, still protecting her rear.

Panting from the pursuit, Madam Xu demanded, “Will you try sneaking out again?”

Lu Chao Chao pouted. [How did Mama find out? Where did I slip up?] she thought, frustrated, recalling how she had even raised her hand and pretended to sleep.

Madam Xu couldn’t suppress a chuckle at her antics. “Never mind that. Just come here!”

The Crown Prince intervened, shielding Madam Xu’s approach. “Madam Xu, please, Chao Chao is still a child and learning. Gentle guidance will suffice. I will see to her lectures. Please, have peace of mind.”

Acknowledging the Crown Prince’s words, Madam Xu bowed and with a lingering stern look at Lu Chao Chao, she stepped back.

“This child is untamed and fearless… As she grows, how will I manage to protect her?” Madam Xu murmured with concern.

The Crown Prince, gently holding the little troublemaker by the hand, reassured her with a smile, “Chao Chao is like the moon—destined to shine fearlessly.”

“I’ll accompany her outside and ensure she returns safely. Do not fret.”

Astonished by the Crown Prince’s high esteem for Lu Chao Chao, Madam Xu sighed as they departed.

On their way, the Crown Prince inquired softly, “Does it still hurt?”

Lu Chao Chao shook her head. “Nope! It’s all better now!”

“Hehe, it was just a wittle ouchie,” she giggled.

“Crown Prince Brother, last night, a super scary man showed up…” she started, her gestures vivid.

“He was all dwessed in black, and he wooked weally mean…”

“And then, evewyone just fell down awound him…”

“Who was he?” Lu Chao Chao had never seen someone so frightening before.

The Crown Prince paused before nodding. “Maybe he was a war god from up above in the sky realms.”

Lu Chao Chao’s eyes widened. “A war god? Why was he so scawy?”

The Crown Prince gently stroked her head. “He’s got something really old he can’t stop thinking about.”

“Something that’s kept him sad and stuck for a very, very long time.”

Puzzled, Lu Chao Chao asked, “How come a god can turn into a scawy spirit? What’s making him so sad?”

“He’s looking for something he believes in,” the Crown Prince whispered.

“What’s that?” Lu Chao Chao, still wide-eyed, wondered.

“You’re still little; just remember to be happy and run and play.” He patted her head as they approached the National Temple.

At the base of the National Temple, the Crown Prince led Lu Chao Chao up the mountain discreetly. The temple was abuzz with people seeking peace due to what happened last night.

A young monk, alerted of their arrival, greeted them at the entrance. “Your Highness, the abbot has yet to return…”

The Crown Prince raised a hand. “No need to disturb anyone.”

As they ventured deeper into the temple, the Crown Prince unlocked a secluded area behind the mountain with a jade amulet. Martial monks permitted them entry.

“Where are we?” Lu Chao Chao looked around, curious.

“The place where faith sleeps,” the Crown Prince replied, his voice trembling.

He lifted her, and they advanced, passing ancient writings, arriving at a peaceful spot filled with blooming flowers and sweet birdsong, like a part of heaven.

At the center, an unmarked memorial stone slab stood.

Curious, Lu Chao Chao dismounted from his arms and approached the stele with no inscription.

“Why doesn’t it have a name?” she asked innocently.

“Because nobody is good enough to put their name on it,” the Crown Prince explained, clearing weeds from around the mound and placing a wreath on the blank stele.

Lu Chao Chao walked around the stele, noticing the Crown Prince’s eyes getting watery but he quickly held it back.

“What’s this for?” She pointed to a carving on a stone wall behind the mound.

The wall showed seven divine figures, looking all serious and asking the sky for something.

“They are very important gods,” the Crown Prince’s gaze lingered on the carvings.

Despite being worn by time, the carvings still looked really special.

“Why do gods have to ask for stuff?” Lu Chao Chao was confused; they were supposed to be all-powerful, so why did they need to kneel and pray?

The Crown Prince stayed quiet, thinking about their never-ending search for something really important, a quest that goes beyond the sky.

“That scary man last night, he was one of those gods.” He pointed to one of the carvings.

“They come down here looking for a very special soul that can help them stop feeling so sad. Even though the soul is back, they sometimes get a bit lost.”

Lu Chao Chao pressed her lips together, thinking hard.

“Is his name Xing Hui?” she guessed.

The Crown Prince looked deep into her eyes.

“Yes, that scary man is Xing Hui.”

Lu Chao Chao gasped, her eyes wide in surprise as she looked back and forth between the prince and stone slab.

“Seven… gods?” Her heart fluttered, realizing she just happened to have seven students!

The Crown Prince smiled gently, listing them: “The justice god, Bai Zong. The war god, Xing Hui. The life god, Xian Ting. The dark god, Xuan Yu. The seasons god, Gan Tang. The time god, Chong Yue. And the luck god, Sheng He.”

“These seven gods take care of everything up in the sky, and Bai Zong is their boss.”

(Oh my gosh!)

(I just woke up, and all my teachers turned into gods!)

(What am I gonna do now?)

(I feel like running around the whole sky!)
