Dimensional Hotel Chapter 90

Chapter 90: Got a Job!

Yu Sheng thought it over carefully and decided that taking all the towels, washbasins, and empty bottles from home to the Special Affairs Bureau for appraisal wasn’t really a good idea. Not even considering if the Bureau would be willing, just dumping all this junk into the “Rare Artifacts Market” might disturb the whole niche market. After all, it’s a pretty small circle, and if he casually tossed out his stuff, it could crash the yearly trading volume.

However, his restless and flexible mind didn’t completely cool down because of that rationality; instead, it drifted into more serious contemplation. Irene tilted her head and looked up at Yu Sheng, her small doll face full of doubt. “Are you thinking about selling all that junk again?”

“Little Red Riding Hood said we have to at least sell things that look mysterious, with a sense of ‘atmosphere,'” Yu Sheng waved his hand dismissively. “Because quite a few collectors are regular people with ‘inside’ information about supernatural stuff. They buy these things mainly out of a love for the occult and as something to brag about.”

Irene sighed. “Sometimes, I really can’t understand humans. So many have no abilities but love risking their lives—what’s wrong with being an ordinary person who can’t see other cities and Entities? At least they can live safely, but no, they have to be interested in ‘the other side,’ thinking a bit of training in safety measures makes them invincible. Never mind whether those measures actually work, who knows if these Otherworld artifacts they collect are dangerous or not.”

“Anyway, even the Special Affairs Bureau doesn’t ban it,” Yu Sheng shrugged. “Anything they appraise and let into the market is basically harmless. The really creepy stuff is all locked up in their containment warehouse—at least, that’s what the Borderland Communications Encyclopaedia says.”

Just as he finished saying that, Yu Sheng’s phone buzzed again. Little Red Riding Hood had sent a new message. “If you’re interested in making some extra cash, I’ve got a job. Want to help out?”

Yu Sheng paused and immediately replied, “What kind of job?”

“It’s a commission from the Association of Strange Objects. Originally, I turned it down because it’s a bit risky, and the payoff is uncertain. Plus, I’m short on people. But if you’re willing to help—and bring along that tough fox of yours—it’d be perfect. You’ll get a taste of what real Spirit Realm detective work is like, plus half the payment. And most importantly, if we run into something we can’t handle, you can grab me and run.”

A moment later, Yu Sheng saw a new message pop up on his screen: “The job is to go into the ‘Museum’ and retrieve an item. If you manage to bring it out successfully, we’re done. If you’re interested, I’ll send you all the details about the ‘Museum,’ and the reward.”

Yu Sheng instinctively exchanged a look with Irene (the fox was still busy gnawing on a chicken leg, completely unaware of what was happening). They both saw a hint of excitement in each other’s eyes.

They’d got a job!

Of course, what Yu Sheng was thinking about wasn’t just the “commission” and “payment.” More importantly, it was the chance to get closer to the Otherworld, to learn more about the supernatural, and to gather more knowledge.

For him, this knowledge was worth more than any payment. Because maybe—just maybe—somewhere among the information about the Otherworld lay the key to finding the way back home.

“Send it over!” he quickly messaged back.

Little Red Riding Hood didn’t waste time and forwarded a long set of details, finishing with a sum for the reward. Yu Sheng froze for a moment when he saw the number.

“That much?”

“We split it fifty-fifty,” Little Red Riding Hood explained. “Going into the Otherworld is dangerous, so the payment’s high. But our costs are also high—not to mention the wear and tear on our gear. Just the drugs alone—rationality suppressants, nebulizers, and inducers—aren’t cheap, and we have to pay for them ourselves. After all those expenses, the actual take-home pay isn’t that much.”

Yu Sheng stared at the message, dumbfounded, then finally asked, “What’s a rationality suppressant, nebulizer, or inducer?”

After sending that message, there was a long silence from Little Red Riding Hood.

Yu Sheng waited a long time before a reply popped up on the screen, starting with a string of exclamation marks. “!!!!!! You glitched out and got lucky again! I’m so jealous!!!”

Yu Sheng thought about it, then looked down at Irene. “What does she mean?”

“I don’t know,” Irene scratched her head. “Maybe she’s just jealous of how carefree you are?”

“I don’t think that’s it…”

Yu Sheng muttered to himself, but then another message popped up: “I just talked to the Association’s client. They agreed to give us the job again, but we’re on a tight deadline—no later than midnight tomorrow. If you’re free, it’d be best to set off tonight.”

Yu Sheng thought for a moment. He didn’t have anything to do at home anyway, and Foxy could probably use some exercise after eating so much, so he quickly replied, “Alright, tonight it is.”

“I’ll send you the address. Get here as soon as you can.”

Putting away his phone, Yu Sheng let out a deep breath, then looked over at Foxy, who was just finishing licking her fingers after chewing up a chicken bone. He reached over and patted her tail. “Foxy, get changed. We’re heading out.”

Foxy looked at him blankly. “Huh? Benefactor, where are we going?”

“The Hotel’s got a job for us,” Yu Sheng said with an eager grin. “We’re going on an adventure.”

“Alright!”

Moments later, Yu Sheng stepped out of the house, Foxy following closely, hugging an already lifeless Irene. The three of them stood on the empty lot in front of Wutong Road No. 66, facing the night wind, gazing out at the city under the dark sky. After a while, Irene suddenly blurted, “How are we getting there?”

“I can take you?” Foxy looked at Yu Sheng, her eyes glinting in the night. She still seemed a little hesitant before they left, but now she looked excited. “Benefactor, just tell me the direction.”

A picture flashed through Yu Sheng’s mind, and he shook his head hurriedly. “No way. A rocket-boosted fox speeding across the city at midnight—I don’t even know what headlines Boundary City would come up with tomorrow—let’s just call a cab.”

Irene fidgeted a bit. “…The first mission for a supernatural organization and we’re cramming into a rideshare?”

“Well, it’s our startup phase…” Yu Sheng also felt a bit awkward. “Once we have some money, we’ll get a car. But to be honest, with the three of us, it’s not that cramped. You don’t even take up space.”

Irene cursed him out, not holding back.

Yu Sheng had gotten quite skilled at tuning Irene’s rants into background noise. He ignored her completely, then headed with Foxy towards the street corner, pulling out his phone to call a car.

They weren’t calling it right in front of the house, just in case they ran into another “locksmith” situation.

Foxy watched Yu Sheng’s actions curiously. After a while, she pointed at his phone and said, “Benefactor, your magic tool seems very convenient—it does everything.”

“Don’t you have something like this in your place?” Yu Sheng asked, genuinely curious. He figured Foxy’s home civilization level was pretty high, so it didn’t make sense they didn’t have something like a personal information device.

“We do,” Foxy nodded, but then added, “But kids aren’t allowed to use it because it could interfere with our training. My mom’s lenient—she let me use it for half an hour every day, but most of the features were restricted.”

Yu Sheng: “…”

Even a cyber-cultivation fox has to deal with parental controls on screen time?!

“I’ll reset my old phone and give it to you,” Yu Sheng said offhandedly, sighing. “It probably won’t be as advanced as the ‘magic tool’ you used as a kid, but it should be enough to keep you entertained and help you learn more about this world.”

Foxy’s eyes sparkled. “Thank you, Benefactor!”

“Hey! What about me?” Irene protested immediately. “I want one too!”

Yu Sheng gave her a sideways glance. “With your size, can you even handle a phone? You’d have trouble holding it to both your mouth and ear at the same time.”

“Why not? I can use your laptop just fine!” Irene retorted, indignant. “I’ll just grab it with both hands!”

Her bringing that up made Yu Sheng’s forehead throb. “You’ve got the nerve to mention using my laptop—I haven’t forgotten about what you did to my account!”

Irene’s tone instantly softened. “Didn’t you hang me on the clothesline for half an hour as punishment? We’re even—plus, the ban is only for seventy-two hours…”

Yu Sheng opened his mouth, about to say more, when headlights suddenly flashed from the distant street corner, interrupting him. The car had arrived.

He and Foxy turned to look in the direction of the noise, and a clunky little car came into view.

Irene frowned. “Isn’t that car a bit too shabby? It looks ready for the scrapyard.”

Yu Sheng watched as the car crossed a speed bump, each thud making him worry that its bumper might fall off. He pulled out his phone to double-check the license plate of the rideshare, confirming that it really was their car, though his expression twisted a bit. “It is kind of old, but it’s not that bad.”

Just as he finished speaking, the car creaked to a stop in front of them.

To be honest, when it stopped, Yu Sheng genuinely wondered if it was a proper brake or if the car had just broken down. Then he saw the driver’s window roll down, and a familiar face appeared.

Xu Jiali’s face. “Oh, it’s you guys?”

The two-meter-tall man, squeezed into the driver’s seat, looked genuinely surprised.
