Law of the devil chapter 05

Chapter 5 “Poison Master”

Without hope for his son after so many failures, the Earl has finally come to the conclusion he must abandon Du Wei. The heir to the great Rowling House must be a capable individual, otherwise they are not qualified to take up the name. In that case, Raymond had no choice but to try for another child.

Sure enough, the man’s effort on his wife eventually paid off. After a month of consecutive seeding and world turning at night, the Countess was once again pregnant with a second child. And by next winter, Earl Raymond got his second boy like he wished.

While the whole mansion was basking in celebration, Du Wei continues on unchanged. He remains locked up in his own room by himself. The only exception being that he’s currently reading up on the knowledges of magic alchemy within this world after his father Earl Raymond finally caved.

Speaking of which, Du Wei did get a brief glimpse of his younger brother not long after the birth when the servants led him to meet the baby.

First thing he noticed upon seeing his mother the Countess was the loud crying from the infant. He could tell the Earl was very pleased by the loud screaming because its traditionally believed within this household that a newborn of this nature would grow up to be an outstanding young man.

As for himself, Du Wei was left to his own bidding. In fact, Earl Raymond didn’t even want to cast an extra glance at his firstborn. This could be seen by how quickly he dismissed the young lad after the short interaction.

Naturally the Countess felt sorry for her son. But as a mother of a second child, the woman had no energy left to care for another, not when the infant was still crying right in her arms craving for attention.

Quietly leaving the rowdy room behind, Du Wei couldn’t help but cast one final departing glance at that well-lit scene. His heart was already numb to everything around himself, he knows this; however, Du Wei just couldn’t resist feeling a tinge of disappointment by the treatment from his supposed father.

Stop thinking about it, you do not belong in this world and he’s not your father, and… she’s not….

Recalling back to that stormy night and of how the woman kneeled in front of the statue for his sake, Du Wei’s not going say he’s not moved. Yes, he regrets making the Countess go through such pain, but that’s all the emotions he could give in his state. Shaking his head, the boy pushed onward towards the study without looking back again.

Du Wei couldn’t deny it, he’s very much interested in this so-called “magic” of this world. Even though that mage known as Clark disapproved of his talent, that doesn’t mean he’s willing to accept the judgement of others.

As the home of the Earl, the mansion naturally had a large collection of books, and quite a few of them relating to magic as well. Therefore, as adamant as he was about accepting the truth, Du Wei had to admit Clark was right about himself – he didn’t have any talent to become a mage. Even if he sat there and meditated the whole day, he wouldn’t feel the tiniest spec of magical elements in the air. And one time he even fell asleep without knowing it himself….

Now that’s where magic alchemy comes into the equation. Du Wei’s not someone who gives up easily, not in his past life and most certainly not in this life. Since a Magic Chemist could still be marginally recognized as a magic profession, he must give it a try regardless. Yet, after inquiring around from the adults, that’s when the cold hard truth came out and why they used such a word for it.

True, a Magic Chemist was still recognized as a mage in the eyes of the law, but there’s one crucial factor differentiating this profession from a genuine mage – they couldn’t use magic!

If someone had to use an analogy to describe the situation, it would be comparable to the medical field. For example, a doctor would be a magician while a nurse would be equivalent to a magic chemist. Though both jobs are part of the medical field, a doctor far outweighs a nurse in terms of the pecking order.

Even so, something did raise Du Wei’s interest after his research. For example: adding an eye of Duoluoge Frog to a mix would yield something akin to a concoction capable of muting someone for a period, or if you mix the saliva of a Ruler Sword Dragon with the liver of a Triangle Scaled Fish, you would get something akin to a petrification powder. Of course, all of these animals and plants are new to him in light of things being so close to the scientific field of chemistry.

Rather than calling this profession Magic Chemist, Du Wei had a better name for it and that was ‘Magic Physician’.

Unbeknownst to him though at this time, his thoughts just so happens to coincide with how the people of this world evaluated this profession: Poison Master. The most common use for people in this line of work lied in their ability to create poison, a dirty skill used only in the darkest of jobs.

Days came and went with nothing new to add. Du Wei did try hard during this period, unfortunately for him, his knowledge remains stuck at the rudimentary level of theories and imagination. It’s not like he could just run out and gather the ingredients mentioned in the books, after all, these are magical items used by mages. Furthermore, no one would let a child come into contact with those dangerous items, regardless of his status and whatnot.

Before anyone knew it, six years had passed and Du Wei’s little brother – Gabri – grew up to be the typical Rowling as everyone expected. Both lovable and energetic, Gabri, at merely six years of age, has already started to shine by taking up sword lessons from Alpha and even received favorable commendations for his skill. To everyone in the estate, Gabri was undoubtedly the future hope and heir to the family name, hence the reason why their father Earl Raymond would make several surprising decisions during this period.

Firstly, their the Earl decided to impart the art of wielding “Dou Qi” to Gabri at the age of eight. A powerful ability in this world and a must for someone from a military lineage. However, the most shocking news came not long after this when it was announced a boy that’s still seven was to be engaged to the youngest daughter of the current finance minster.

(Dou Qi – the type of energy used by martial artists)

Though rumors said the engagement was decided before Gabri was even born, but in truth, many knew the one to marry the girl in the original plan was Du Wei. But as we all know, it was not meant to be following so many disappointments by the eldest son.

As for Du Wei, this former heir of the family has been left to the shadows, eclipsed by his younger brother in every fashion. Nowadays, the Earl rarely ever met the boy and even the Countess would only visit on occasions instead of daily. But when she did though, this motherly woman would always sing a lullaby to dull her eldest son to sleep. Only during these comforting nights would Du Wei’s heart soften, forcing him to fake his sleep in order to avoid spilling tears in front of the woman.

And as if fate wasn’t cruel enough already, even the last bit of space available for this one known as a “retard” was eventually ripped from him. On a quiet night, Earl Raymond sent the boy away under the camouflage of darkness, tucking Du Wei away inside the family carriage destined for the Rowling Clan’s territory in the far-off south.

The reason announced to the public was that he’s old enough to oversee the family business, but Du Wei knew better, he was banished, plain and simple….

Everyone knew the most important business of any noble house lies in the imperial capital, a place of politics. Now that he’s banished to the countryside, it’s likely he won’t be able to step foot back into the capital again until he’s summoned by his father.

  1. Isn’t his situation his own fault? Even if they are not your real parents, one still occupies the body of their real child. He was being a prK while he was still angsting over past life memories. I will be disappointed if he decides to hate his parents and be vengeful for events he himself set up by choices. He was not a real waste, he was not damaged or framed or poisoned by others. He was actually treated very well despite the fear he could end the bloodline for most of his early childhood, originally his dad just wanted to see signs of ability to function as head in ANY way. Reputation he caused himself can also spoil the status of the new heir. Who did not scheme to be so. So author … why should readers or MC care that engagement was changed or mention it? One hand shows that any misery past present or future is directly caused by his actions….. other hand author is trying to show him as pathetic victim? Type of victim that throws themselves down in a store and calls a lawyer…maybe

    1. MC ignores parents and feels saddens when the Parents ignores him. And the author want the readers to sympathize with the MC? What a load of cr*p.
