Chapter 219: Little Green Tea Chao Chao

This novel is translated and hosted on BCatranslation

Lord Jingxi had many concubines but only one main wife. Together, they had three daughters and one son. This only boy was spoiled and treated like a prince, never knowing what it was like to be told “no.”

The princess consort, the young prince’s mother, touched his cheek with concern. “How could she slap you? What if it leaves a scar and affects your future prospects?”

“Madam Xu, what’s going on with your daughter? She’s out of control at such a young age. Do you want her to end up like you, divorced and scorned?” The princess consort couldn’t mask her disdain.

Madam Xu’s face fell upon hearing this. She felt a mix of guilt and sorrow after learning about the incident from a servant.

“My divorce has nothing to do with my daughter!” Madam Xu snapped back, her voice strong despite her own heartache.

“You have quite the sharp tongue!” retorted the princess consort, her face turning red with anger.

Madam Xu let out a cold laugh. “Disrespectful? I’m merely stating the obvious. ‘Like mother, like son.’ Your son has picked up your unpleasant ways,” she replied sharply.

“You don’t even seek the truth and hurl insults. Were you taught to be so vile?” Madam Xu stood firm, shielding Chao Chao behind her.

From behind her mother, Chao Chao’s soft and childlike voice chimed in, “He started it first, and he was mean!”

“The prince is just a child; his words are harmless. How can you take offense?” The princess consort defended her son vigorously.

Chao Chao, with a puzzled look, pointed to herself and questioned, “He’s six and gets excused for being a child, but I’m only two and expected to act grown-up?”

The room fell silent at her words.

“Yu Zhou, did she start the trouble? Tell me, did she say something to you?” the princess consort pressed her son.

Xie Yu Zhou bit his lip, choosing to remain silent.

A servant quickly interjected, “Princess Sunshine provoked him first. That’s why the prince reacted!”

Chao Chao stuck her tongue out at the servant. “What did I say? Tell me, did I really insult him? Why won’t he say anything?”

Xie Yu Zhou, caught in a dilemma, looked helplessly at his mother, still silent.

“Did she threaten you? Speak up if you feel wronged!” urged the princess consort, seeing her son struggle.

Just then, a servant announced, “His Lordship is here.”

Lord Jingxi, though not as striking as the king, held a significant presence. Unlike the handsome king, Jingxi had a more ordinary appearance but carried an air of authority.

He frowned at Chao Chao. “As the king’s adopted daughter, you should respect your elders. Apologize to Yu Zhou, and we’ll consider the matter settled. What do you say, Sunshine?”

The princess consort was furious, “Look at what she did to Yu Zhou!”

Chao Chao crossed her arms, her small stature belying her fierce spirit. “I didn’t do anything wrong. Why should I apologize? He insulted Mommy first!”

“You’re stubborn just like your mother!” Lord Jingxi exclaimed in frustration.

“Yu Zhou, did she insult you first, leading you to hit her?” he pressed his son, who shivered under his gaze.

Xie Yu Zhou, tearful, hesitated, “She… maybe she did insult me…”

The princess consort raised an eyebrow at Madam Xu. “Do you still deny your daughter’s fault? What did she say, Yu Zhou?”

Pale and unwilling, Yu Zhou whispered, “Mother, can we not talk about this anymore?”

“Speak!” Lord Jingxi demanded sternly.

With tears rolling down his cheeks, Yu Zhou finally blurted out, “She said I look just like my father!”

The tension in the room thickened after that remark, making even the walls seem to hold their breath.

Chao Chao’s laughter rippled through the tense atmosphere. “Hehe, yes, you look just like your father. Is that bad?”

Prince Jingxi’s face flushed a deep red, his anger visible. The princess consort too seemed to pale, taken aback by the turn of events.

In a moment of fury, Prince Jingxi turned and struck his son harshly, causing Xie Yu Zhou to stumble and fall, a small trickle of blood appearing at the corner of his mouth.

Xie Yu Zhou, shocked and hurt, covered his face, trying to muffle his sobs.

“What are you doing?!” The princess consort screamed, rushing to her son’s side.

“Son, are you alright?” she asked, her hands gently cradling his face.

“What am I doing? This child dares to mock me by saying he looks like me?!” Prince Jingxi roared, unable to contain his wrath.

His self-consciousness about his appearance was well-known, and now it seemed even his own son found it laughable.

“Is looking like your own father supposed to be an insult?” Prince Jingxi thundered, his voice echoing off the walls.

“How have you raised him? He can’t even show basic respect, daring to scorn his own father!” Xie Jingxi’s voice was thick with humiliation, as if he himself had been struck.

“He’s just a little boy, only six years old, he doesn’t fully understand…” the princess consort pleaded, her eyes brimming with tears.

The household staff and other onlookers tried to defuse the escalating situation. “He’s still very young, Your Highness. Please, let’s not be too harsh…”

“Remember, he’s just started his education. There’s still much he needs to learn. Please, temper your anger…” even the dean interjected, hoping to calm the authoritative prince.

Chao Chao, wide-eyed and innocent, added her opinion. “Mommy, the little boy said mean things about you. I’m just two and I stood up for my mommy. Brother Yu Zhou is six, how can he not love his father just because of looks?”

Prince Jingxi’s anger seemed to reignite at her words.

“Xie Yu Zhou, come here now!” he commanded.

“Father, I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean it,” Xie Yu Zhou whimpered, still hiding behind his mother.

Chao Chao, trying to lighten the mood, suggested, “Uncle, don’t be mad. People say, ‘a leopard doesn’t change its spots.’ If Brother Yu Zhou is misbehaving, maybe you could think about having another child? A child who loves and respects you. They say a dog doesn’t dislike its home because it’s poor; a child shouldn’t dislike their father for how he looks. Brother Yu Zhou is being very naughty…”

“It really hurts when someone says something mean about my mommy. Maybe if he gets a scolding, he’ll learn to be nice like me!” Chao Chao mischievously voiced her opinion.

Madam Xu fought to keep a straight face, her eyes twinkling with suppressed amusement at her daughter’s candid remarks.

The contrast between Chao Chao’s youthful innocence and Xie Yu Zhou’s behavior was stark and did not go unnoticed.

“Look at Princess Sunshine, only two and yet so understanding! And you, at six, still fail to grasp basic respect!” Prince Jingxi scolded, his disappointment clear.

“You foolish woman, what lessons have you been teaching him?!” he barked at the princess consort, his patience worn thin.

The dean, sensing the potential for things to escalate further, quickly covered Chao Chao’s mouth. [Good heavens, this little one’s words, though truthful, are like oil to the fire. We must tread carefully, or she might just push the prince over the edge with her sharp tongue.]
