Chapter 117
Chapter 118: Moon Silver Wolf Initiates a Beast Contract???
After giving birth, the Moon Silver mother wolf was very weak. Even though it stayed alert and guarded, Qian Qi still put aside old grudges and cared for it for several days.
Beside a basin of warm water, she held a shoe brush and hummed a tune as she scrubbed the mother wolf’s beautiful, regal silver fur.
She stroked the soft coat and said with a serious face: “Yin Zi, listen to me. We have spent so much time together that you should know what kind of person I am.”
She smoothed the fur with her small hand, her expression very proper, and added: “I even delivered your pups with my own hands. That means I not only saved you, I am basically half a godmother to the little ones.”
She coaxed in a sweet voice: “How about this, you take the initiative and send me a Beast Contract request. From now on you can call me sister, benefactor, and master, and I will call you the pups’ mom and Yin Zi. We each use our own titles, how does that sound?”
The Moon Silver mother wolf fell silent.
The System also went quiet.
The System sighed: “Wow, you really have no shame.”
The mother wolf lay on a soft blanket and lowered those ice blue, gemlike eyes. It watched Qian Qi bathe it, then looked toward the door at the pups tumbling and playing outside.
The pups were healthy under Qian Qi’s care. They had plenty to eat and were taken out to run every day, so their lean muscles were developing well. They had not Awakened yet, but the intelligence and agility of the Moon Silver Magi Wolf Clan already showed. Their nimble bodies sprinted across the grassland, as free and wild as the wind.
Most important of all, because Qian Qi was here, any Magibeast that tried to come onto the plain to eat the pups had been driven off or killed by her.
So, Qian Qi was good.
She was strong, and she had saved the mother wolf’s life. The Magi Wolf Clan repays kindness, so it would repay Qian Qi.
But she also rode the pups.
Its children were not even a month old yet. What a little devil.
The Moon Silver mother wolf stifled the urge to roll its eyes and let out a long sigh.
Beast Contracting with Qian Qi was clearly a smart choice. There was little food here, and hungry Magibeasts prowled everywhere. If a pack attack started, one beast could never protect every pup at once.
If it could gain Qian Qi’s protection, its pups would be safe and at least live long enough to reach their Awakener Skill.
Of course, that depended on Qian Qi being willing to protect them.
Just as it thought that, Qian Qi said shamelessly with a grin: “One is not too few and nine is not too many. If you bring your pups to recognize me as their master too, I definitely will not refuse your kindness.”
The Moon Silver mother wolf stared, unable to understand every word, but somehow sure she was eyeing its babies with greedy interest.
After a moment of thought, it raised its large head. The mirror-bright silver coat rippled with the motion and stirred a cool, clear breeze.
A Moon Silver Wolf had no flashy horn and no terrible, twisted face. It had only silver pure as white metal and blue eyes clear as ice. When it galloped under the moon, it looked like flowing silver moonlight, beautiful enough to steal your breath.
Qian Qi might act like a little rascal most days, but she still loved gorgeous things. Maybe it was the taste she inherited from her homeland that made her especially fond of white and silver fur.
Seeing the mother wolf did not seem to understand her words, she decided to teach it Chinese during the next few days so it could understand human speech.
She turned to step out of the cabin to plan a “devil training” language course, but after two steps a shadow fell over her.
She looked up and found the mother wolf pressing its forehead to hers.
It rumbled in a low, husky voice like chanting a spell; after a moment, a strange white sigil blossomed in the air before Qian Qi. The lines were intricate, the white light flickering as it tugged at her Psychic Power.
She swallowed and whispered: “Is this a Contract Sigil?”
People with Beast Taming Talent could send a special Contract Sigil to a Magibeast. If the Magibeast agreed, it would become the human’s Contract Beast. Magibeasts could also send Contract Sigils to humans.
But the sigil from a Moon Silver Wolf looked nothing like the human version. A Beast Tamer’s sigil was a fixed pattern inside a circle. A Magibeast’s had no outer circle at all, so it looked extra ornate and showy.
Qian Qi’s heart thumped hard. She lifted her head in disbelief and asked: “You really want to make a Beast Contract with me?”
The mother wolf lowered its blue eyes to gaze at her. It could not understand human words, but it could see the surprise in her eyes.
What was she surprised about?
It did not know. It put away the sharp barbs on its tongue and gave Qian Qi’s cheek a gentle lick, then gave a soft growl.
Hurry up.
Qian Qi blinked: “???”
She touched her small hand, a little overwhelmed. She had flattered A Tu for so long and that mutt still never sent a Beast Contract request, yet this mother wolf had only been with her a few days and was willing to sign with her.
She choked up and said: “You are a very good wolf.” She turned and reached her hand toward the Contract Sigil.
The System Panel suddenly floated up between her and the sigil, blocking her hand.
A bad feeling rose in Qian Qi’s chest.
The System chimed sweetly: “Scan complete. This Moon Silver Magi Wolf is E grade. With your D grade Psychic Power, you can only have one D grade Magibeast under contract and cannot add an E grade wolf. Please be more cautious when selecting your first Contract Beast.”
Qian Qi: “???”
She snapped: “Why did you not say that earlier?”
She felt like someone who had saved up a whole dowry to marry two beloved fair-faced sweethearts, only to be told her budget only allowed her to marry the pricier one first.
The System snickered: “Dear, you should go persuade a D grade Magibeast instead. Giving you this reminder for free is me doing you a huge favor.”
Qian Qi slammed the System panel to the ground in her mind and stomped on it twice.
Stupid System. [So I sweet-talked for nothing.]
With a sour sting in her chest, she glanced back at the Moon Silver mother wolf, then rubbed its muzzle and said hoarsely: “I am sorry. You are a good wolf.”
The words were the same as before, but now everything had changed. Sadness rose like a river, and she did not know how to speak her pain.
The mother wolf froze when Qian Qi did not accept the Beast Contract. It had not expected her to refuse.
Was it because it was too weak?
Its pride took a heavy hit. It lifted a paw and thumped Qian Qi with a wolf punch, knocking her to the ground.
Qian Qi lay there in a ridiculous pose and covered her little face: “???” [Seriously, he is already hitting me before the wedding?]
The failed contract made the mother wolf restless, but it still had to repay a life debt. It needed a new way to thank her.
Its gaze slid to the pups playing by the door. Gritting its teeth, it stood up, picked up the weakest pup, and set it in front of Qian Qi.
The other pups would be able to Awaken their Magi Wolf Clan skills after a little time and might have ways to escape danger. But the eighth one was different. Its body was weak, and who knew how long Awakening would take. It needed Qian Qi’s protection the most.
Qian Qi found a pup shoved into her arms and was totally confused. She turned to the System and asked: “What does this mean?”
The petty System smiled, the footprints she had stomped across its panel still glaring: “Translation costs 3.74.”
