Chapter 81
Chapter 81: Her Blood Pressure Shot Up!
What Du An Rao just thought was like a thunderclap out of the blue. Du Lian Shuang was so shocked she nearly twisted her own fingernails off.
What was going on? There was even a second victim? And she was worse off than her? Just how badly had she been harmed?
Du Lian Shuang glanced at her dear friend of many years, then thought about that child she had also watched grow up.
The anger she had finally managed to calm flared up again, roaring like a wildfire.
Her friend was right. These lousy men were all the same. Not a single good one, and none of them could be trusted!
Yin Bai Lu, who did not know the truth, watched her best friend, who had been joking with her just a moment ago, suddenly change expression. Her face even twisted with anger, which gave Yin Bai Lu quite a fright.
“What is wrong with you? You look awful. Are you feeling sick? Do you want me to call a doctor?”
Du Lian Shuang snapped out of it like waking from a dream and quickly stopped her: “No, no, I’m just… just hungry.”
“Hungry?” Yin Bai Lu let out a breath of relief. “So you’re just hungry, you scared me. Wait here, I’ll go buy you something to eat. What do you want?”
Just as she finished speaking, Mother Du pushed open the door. “I heard you saying you were hungry as soon as I got to the door,” she said. “I brought chicken soup and some dishes for you. Eat while it’s hot.”
As Du Lian Shuang’s close friend, Yin Bai Lu also knew Mother Du. Seeing that she had brought food, she gave up on going downstairs.
After they greeted each other, Mother Du went up to the bed and ladled soup for Du Lian Shuang. Du An Rao quietly stayed to the side, secretly watching this Ms. Yin. The more she looked, the more she wanted to cry in sympathy for her and for her own aunt.
The story that involves these two is called “Legend of the Cui Clan”. Just like that overpowered male-lead entertainment-circle novel from before, it is written from a male point of view. In other words, it is a so-called male-oriented novel.
Early male-oriented web novels had a common problem: the male lead usually had a whole crowd of women around him, or even a full-on harem where he married several wives.
In the first third of this book, the point of view is Cui Jue Yan’s. It tells the tangled love and hate between him and his two wives, and how he rose across social classes by becoming a live-in son-in-law of the Du family.
He goes from a poor boy from a remote area to a well-known, hands-on entrepreneur, and step by step gets rid of everyone who stands over him, completely shaking off the Du family’s control and taking a whole big company for himself.
After that, in the remaining two-thirds of the book, the male protagonist shifts to Cui Jue Yan and Cui Dong Mei’s son, Cui Cheng Ye.
In his eyes, he, his mother, his grandfather and grandmother, and Cui Jue Yan are the real happy family, while Du Lian Shuang is just a shameless mistress who only liked his dad’s looks, knowingly stole him away even though he already had a family, and used money and power to force her way in.
Du Lian Shuang, who had been tricked out of both money and love and was still being called the mistress: “!!!” [Where’s my knife? My knife?!]
Because of Du Lian Shuang’s existence, Cui Cheng Ye deeply hated those rich young ladies.
But his so-called hatred was only talk. It only existed in his mind. At heart he was just brainwashing himself with a “I hate the rich so I’m not materialistic” routine.
Inspired by his father Cui Jue Yan’s “one step to the top as a live-in son-in-law” success story, he started plotting while still very young to find a rich young lady and save himself thirty years of hard work. And as it happened, Liao Jing Yi was the prey he carefully picked out.
They went to the same school. Liao Jing Yi was sweet and cute, with excellent grades. She was very eye-catching at school. The Liao family’s background was about the same as the Du family’s, and the Yin family that her mother, Yin Bai Lu, came from was also very well off.
Added together, if he could win over Liao Jing Yi, the effect would probably be even better than what his father had done.
When Du Lian Shuang heard Du An Rao mention that brat and Liao Jing Yi studying at the same school, she almost had to pinch the spot under her nose to steady herself.
She knew that Cui Jue Yan had pulled strings to get Cui Cheng Ye into the elite school where Liao Jing Yi studied.
That school was hard to get into. Money alone wasn’t enough, and back then they had used her father’s connections.
So this brat used her family’s money and resources to attend the school her family had helped him get into, then went after her best friend’s daughter, and from the way Du An Rao was talking, he later dumped her and hurt her even worse than he hurt his aunt?!
Great. Her blood pressure shot right up.
Du Lian Shuang gripped her spoon so hard it creaked, and she tore into the chicken meat in a vicious way, as if she wanted to rip those two beasts of a father and son apart like the pieces of meat.
Watching this, the corner of Yin Bai Lu’s mouth twitched. She suddenly had the absurd feeling that her best friend had gone crazy.
“Slow down, slow down. How many days have you gone without eating? Your eyes have gone green. Eat slowly, no one is stealing your food.”
Du Lian Shuang looked up at Yin Bai Lu and could tell at a glance what she was thinking. She couldn’t help rolling her eyes.
[That’s only because you don’t know what happened. If you did, you would definitely be even crazier than me!]
It had to be said that Cui Cheng Ye not only inherited his father’s shamelessness, but also inherited his pretty good talent for studying. Although he had only gotten into the school with Old Master Du’s help, his grades were always decent, placing him in the upper-middle of his year.
Add in the good looks he got from Cui Jue Yan, and his popularity at school was high; he had no shortage of admirers.
Liao Jing Yi first noticed Cui Cheng Ye because of his grades. She had a gentle nature and was smaller than most girls, so she naturally felt drawn to people who were tall and did better than her at school. Simply put, she admired strength.
Once Cui Cheng Ye noticed this, he started using study as an excuse to get close to her, helping her review her homework.
He was not bad looking to begin with. When he took the trouble to act humble, considerate, and understanding, of course her feelings for him rose quickly.
Feeling that this routine looked strangely familiar, Du Lian Shuang was already grinding her teeth.
And when she thought of what happened later, even Du An Rao couldn’t help wanting to curse him out.
[If Cui Jue Yan is a scumbag, then his son is the king of scumbags, even worse than his dad! He and Liao Jing Yi met in high school. He spent three years making her fall deeply in love with him. As soon as they started college, they made their relationship official and then… slept together.]
“Pfft…” The mouthful of chicken soup that Du Lian Shuang had just drunk sprayed out at once, and she coughed so hard she almost saw stars.
Startled, Yin Bai Lu dodged aside in disgust, but still came up to pat her back: “What is wrong with you today? How do you choke on soup like that?”
“Cough, cough… the soup… was too hot, I wasn’t paying attention… cough, cough…”
“All right, all right, stop talking, drink some water.”
Once Du Lian Shuang finally calmed down, Du An Rao was able to continue recalling the details of their later relationship.
[Why else would I call him trash? Because he was afraid that if Liao Jing Yi got pregnant before marriage, it would hurt the image her parents had of him. So every time they slept together, he coaxed her into taking birth control pills and warned her not to tell her parents about it.]
