Chapter 8: The Top Star About to Be Exposed
“What is this?”
“This is Bai Xiu Qing’s prenatal test report. The baby in her belly is indeed more than three months along. The one who changed her report was an outside hire in the Ultrasound Department, a doctor named Fang Cheng. He was her high school classmate and has had a crush on her since then.”
In other words, whether Du Yu Xi’s matter was true or not could be set aside for now, but everything about Bai Xiu Qing was completely real.
“What do you think, Yu Xi?”
“I think…” Du Yu Xi’s eyes turned red, and she said: “I want to know the truth. Even though they are already gone, I, as the president, have to know where I came from. An An said I look almost… exactly the same as that Madam Li.”
Mother Du’s eyes also turned red as she said: “No matter whether you recognize them or not, I raised you for more than ten years. You are my daughter.”
Before, when they thought Du Yu Xi was Wang Xue He’s daughter, Mother Du had felt awful but did not dare say this, afraid of hurting her own biological child’s heart.
Now that worry was gone. Mother and daughter finally took the stone off their hearts and could hug each other and cry it all out.
The three men of the Du family watched this scene and felt a bit lucky. They were glad they could still keep Du Yu Xi, and even more glad that the girl they brought back was Du An Rao, and not some monster like Miss Li.
At that time, Du An Rao still did not know what had happened. After booking the safety deposit box, she started to worry about how to quietly tell the truth to her kind Fourth Sister.
As a result of all her wild thoughts, she slept in the next day. When she dragged herself downstairs with two dark circles under her eyes, everyone else had gone off, some to work and some to school. Only Du He Xuan was still sitting at the table, gracefully enjoying his breakfast.
“You’re up. Eat breakfast first, then go upstairs and pack your luggage.”
Du An Rao’s hand, which was pulling out the chair, froze: “Pack my luggage for what?”
[Second Brother isn’t trying to kick me out of the house, right!]
Father Du and Mother Du had eaten earlier and were sitting on the sofa on the other side drinking tea. They both snapped their heads over to look at her.
The vein on Du He Xuan’s forehead twitched as he said: “Big Brother said you still don’t really know what you like, and you don’t have a clear plan for your future. Since it’s like that, why don’t you come visit the crew with me? Maybe you’ll find something you’re interested in.”
Du An Rao’s whole body went stiff: “Won’t I bother you too much? I have no experience with this, I might not be able to help you at all, Second Brother.”
[Help! How am I supposed to tell Second Brother that, as my sect’s only heir, I have to go back and inherit that tiny shabby temple one day?]
“Pff…” Du He Xuan was caught off guard by this sudden bombshell and almost snorted porridge out of his nose.
Father Du and Mother Du were also shocked. The three of them could not help imagining their daughter (sister) in Daoist priest robes, sitting in a temple, greeting pilgrims and teaching them, and they all shivered hard.
“You don’t need to do anything. Just treat it like a trip. Behave and sit on the side and watch me act.”
Father Du also chimed in: “It’s not a bad thing to go out more and meet more people. How long will you be gone this time?”
“We have to go to City J to shoot on location. There and back will be about a week.”
The time was not long, but Mother Du really could not bear it. Du An Rao had been home for less than two days, and she was going far away again.
She was just about to say something when she saw Du An Rao suddenly open her eyes wide in surprise.
[City J? Isn’t that Fourth Sister’s hometown?]
Yu Xi’s hometown? The Li family was in City J!
Mother Du and the other two looked at each other. In just one glance, they reached a decision.
[It’s fine to go once. I was worrying about how to tell Fourth Sister about this. Maybe in City J I’ll run into someone related to the Li family. Even if I don’t, when I come back I can use the trip as a chance to tell her a bit. Like saying I met someone in City J who looked a lot like her.]
The more Du An Rao thought about it, the better this plan sounded. She no longer argued about Second Brother’s idea. After breakfast, she obediently went upstairs to pack.
When she came down carrying her luggage, she found Father Du and Mother Du standing at the door, each holding a suitcase even bigger than hers.
“Dad, Mom, you are…”
“I talked it over with your dad. City J is far from home, and your Second Brother will be busy with work and might not be able to take care of you. We’ll go with you. We can look after you and take a trip at the same time.”
“What about the company…”
“With your brother there, nothing will go wrong.” Father Du turned into a hands-off boss without a trace of guilt.
Du An Rao: “…”
So, when Du Jun Yan and Du Yu Xi came home from work and school, what they saw was an empty house.
The two people who had been left behind: ?
Father Du and Mother Du said they were going along to take care of Du An Rao, but in fact they did not really follow her into the crew.
This time, Du He Xuan had taken a role in a historical xianxia drama. He was playing a “white moonlight” Immortal Sovereign, and it was only a cameo.
In truth, with his current status, he almost never took TV drama jobs anymore. Even if he did, he would definitely be the male lead. There was no way he would lower himself to play support for a newcomer.
But back when he had first debuted, he had owed this drama’s Director a favor. Taking this role was just to pay that favor back.
Because of that, his small cameo actually became the biggest name in the whole drama. Bringing one more person into the crew to look around really was not a big deal.
The Director, though, got very excited when he heard that Du He Xuan had brought a young girl as pretty as a flower into the crew. He rushed over to look, his eyes full of gossip.
“And this young lady is…?”
Du He Xuan and the Director were old acquaintances. He saw through the man’s little thoughts at a glance and rolled his eyes at him as he said: “My sister, my real sister.”
The Director’s eyes got even brighter when he heard that: “So this is that real sister you’ve been hiding from everyone. Looking closely, she really does look a bit like you. She’s a beauty too. Little sister, since you’re already here, are you interested in a small cameo in Uncle’s show? Uncle promises they’ll dress you up extra pretty and make everyone gasp.”
Du An Rao was pretty sure he had mixed her up with Du Yu Xi. She quickly showed an embarrassed but polite smile.
[Wait a second, is filming this casual now? You can just pull in any random person to act? Also, Director, right now you really look like a creepy uncle trying to lure an innocent girl!]
“Get lost. Milking me isn’t enough for you, and you still want to milk my sister? Stay away from her.”
“You can’t say it like that…”
The Director was about to keep talking when a clear young man’s voice came from behind him: “Director, Brother Du.”
Following the sound, Du An Rao looked over and saw a handsome, cute young man with a smile on his face walking toward them from not far away.
“You’re here. Let me introduce you. This is our drama’s male lead, Pei Yi Yuan. Little Pei, this is Du He Xuan, Film Emperor Du. In the show he’s playing your master.”
[Oh, oh, so this is that new Top Star who dates a bunch of people at the same time and even sleeps with fans. If I remember right, in a few months he’s going to be exposed for those group activities, and his whole image will collapse! He’s the male lead of this drama? Then isn’t my brother acting in this for nothing?]
Du He Xuan: “…”
Not far away, the biggest investor of this drama had just stepped through the crew’s front gate: ?
