Chapter 7
Chapter 7: Have To Believe It
Father Du was very surprised to see the three of them come back together: “Why are you three coming back together?”
“We went out to eat and happened to run into Yu Xi, so we came back together,” Mother Du said.
Father Du wanted to ask more, but he caught the look his wife gave him and had to swallow the words that had reached his lips.
“An An, you haven’t met your second brother yet, have you?” Mother Du quickly changed the topic. She led Du An Rao over to the young man sitting on the sofa. “This is your second brother, Du He Xuan. He has been busy filming out of town these days. The signal there was bad. We only got in touch with him yesterday, and he rushed back right away today.”
From the moment she entered, Du An Rao had not helped sneaking looks at her second brother several times. She had to admit, to become an international superstar, besides strong skills, top-tier looks were also a must.
Unlike her older brother Du Jun Yan, who looked very much like Father Du, Du He Xuan resembled their mother more. His proper face shape and perfect features placed him somewhere between delicate and heroic. You could say he was the best blend of their parents’ looks.
Compared to the dazzling, blinding presence in the videos and photos online, at home he seemed much more lazy and relaxed, like a fluffy soft Persian cat, charming and cute, making people want to reach out and touch him.
But if you really reached out, you would definitely not get his soft belly. What waited for you would be the sharp claws that might scratch your face at any time.
“Even though we’ve never met, I’ve seen Second Brother’s movie,” Du An Rao said. “I can barely count as one of your fans.”
She was not just being polite. She really had watched one of Du He Xuan’s movies.
In that movie, Du He Xuan played a fool. His acting was so good that for a long time after, Du An Rao thought he was actually stupid.
And now, that “fool” had become her real second brother.
Du He Xuan, who thought he had dressed properly and would leave a good impression on his sister: “???”
Of course he knew which movie she meant. It was his debut film, one of his representative works, and also the first one that had won him an award.
Thanks to that movie, he, a newcomer with no formal training, had gone straight to the Film Emperor title. You could say he had reached the peak the moment he debuted.
Because of this, some haters from rival fandoms had used it early on to mock him, saying he only knew how to play fools. In the end, they were all slapped in the face and silenced by one Film Emperor award and classic role after another. He had never taken those negative comments to heart, but that was not the main point.
The point was: he had so many works, so why did Du An Rao end up watching that one!
The Du family members felt a little sour when they heard Du An Rao call herself his fan. But when they heard her reason, they almost burst out laughing. They could not laugh out loud at this time though, or it would seem strange, so each of them was shaking from holding it in.
Du He Xuan was also shaking. He felt like he was about to fall apart.
If he could, he wished he could transmigrate back a few years and stop his “young and foolish” self from taking that role.
Du An Rao did not think that far. She looked at the suddenly stiff Du He Xuan and his face changing colors like a traffic light, and felt nervous inside.
[Why does Second Brother look so serious? Does he not really like me? Does he think I’m pretending to be a fan as soon as I come home to flatter him, that I’m too calculating?]
Du He Xuan: !
“An An!”
“Mm?”
[What, what? Why did he suddenly shout so loud? He scared me!]
All the Du family members turned to look at him with blaming eyes. Du He Xuan felt like all his preparations for today had been ruined. In a weak voice, he said: “I prepared a gift for you. See if you like it.”
Only then did Du An Rao notice the large gift box on the table. Under everyone’s encouraging gaze, she lifted the lid. She was almost blinded on the spot.
Du He Xuan had given her a full set of jewelry. The most eye-catching piece was the necklace. A green diamond cut into a teardrop shape was set in the center, and around it were inlaid hundreds of small diamonds and eight more diamonds of the same color, just a bit smaller.
There was also a pair of earrings, a ring, and a bracelet, all matching in the same color. They looked very expensive at a glance.
“This… must be really expensive.”
Feeling like he had won back one round, Du He Xuan said: “It’s fine. It’s only one year’s endorsement fee.”
Du An Rao: “…”
[Got it. This set is probably worth more than several of my tiny shabby Daoist temples!]
“This is too much. I can’t accept it.”
The smile on Du He Xuan’s face faded. He frowned and thought for a moment: “You don’t like this color? Then what color do you like? I’ll have them order another set. Forget it, I’ll have them order one in every color.”
Du An Rao was so shocked she almost lost her soul. She threw out a hand to stop him: “Don’t!”
[My dear brother, do you think jewelry is cabbage? Order a set in every color? Are you trying to collect seven colors and summon a dragon?]
Du He Xuan: “…”
“No need. I already really like this color.”
“Then take it. My sister, wearing any jewelry, no matter how expensive, is doing those pieces a favor.”
The corner of Du An Rao’s mouth twitched. She felt that her second brother had a bit of an overbearing president aura on him.
[There is no way I dare wear this. If I wore it outside, I’d be afraid some dog on the street would bite me.]
But since Du He Xuan had already said so much, Du An Rao could only accept it. As for where to put it…
“Mom, why don’t you keep it for me?”
“Your brother gave you that gift. Why would you need me to keep it? And things like this will only get more and more in the future. Do you want me to keep them for you every single time?”
Du Yu Xi was more experienced in this: “You can buy a bigger safe and put it in the walk-in closet. It’s safe to keep valuable things inside, and it’s easy to organize.”
Du An Rao’s eyes lit up. Clearly she also thought this was a good idea. She immediately pulled Du Yu Xi over to ask what kind of safe was best.
Mother Du, seeing her two daughters getting along so well, was full of relief. Father Du and Du He Xuan looked surprised, but they also knew this was not a good time to ask questions.
After they looked over the gift, Mother Du used being tired from shopping as an excuse and pulled Father Du upstairs for a nap.
Du He Xuan, who had taken a plane back early that morning, also needed to go upstairs to catch up on sleep. Du Yu Xi pushed her suitcase upstairs to tidy her room.
Once the living room was empty, Du An Rao took the gift back to her room and went online to buy a safe.
However, what she did not know was that the moment her bedroom door closed, everyone else stuck their heads out.
Even Du Jun Yan, who should have been napping at the company at noon, took time to come home. When he came in and saw that Du Yu Xi was also there, he was stunned again.
Mother Du knew the doubts in the hearts of her husband and sons. She quickly told them everything that had happened in the Western restaurant, in full detail.
She left Father Du and Du Jun Yan so dazed they almost could not think, not to mention Du He Xuan, who had not been there yesterday at all.
“So, An Rao is our child, Yu Xi is the Li family’s child, and the girl living with the Li family now is actually that human trafficker Wang Xue He’s biological daughter? Even a drama script wouldn’t dare write something like this. Are you sure all of this is real?”
After speaking, Du He Xuan looked to Du Jun Yan for confirmation: “Brother, do you believe it?”
Du Jun Yan’s answer was to take out a file folder and push it in front of everyone: “We have to believe it.”
