Chapter 44
Chapter 44: Help From a Benefactor
This tragic play of life and death between close family members finally ended in a slightly comical way.
A few minutes later, the four members of the Ye family squeezed into the ward along with Du An Rao and the others, making the originally comfortable single room feel crowded.
“President Xi, Young Master Li, why are you also…”
Unlike the Ye siblings, Father Ye recognized at a glance Xi Jing Yue and Li Zhao Yang, who were following behind the Du sisters.
The Ye and Li families were acquainted, and to Father Ye, Li Zhao Yang counted as a junior.
“When Meng Zhen called Miss Du, we happened to be right beside her. When we heard that Zhi Huan had been in a car accident, we came along to check on him.”
Ye Meng Zhen did not think that much. The shock of losing and then getting her brother back had left her dazed for a moment. Now that she had come back to herself, the first thing she did was worry about her brother’s condition.
“Brother, are you really okay?”
Ye Zhi Huan was both annoyed and amused: “Do you really hope something is wrong with me? Relax, it is just surface wounds. The doctor said it is lucky my internal organs were not hurt. The worst injury on my whole body is this leg. It got stuck when we crashed and broke. It will heal after some rest.”
Only then did Ye Meng Zhen finally relax completely. She pressed a hand to her chest and looked relieved: “Good, good.”
Mother Ye held her daughter’s hand and let out a sigh too: “It really is lucky. Your dad had someone go check the scene. Below that spot is a sheer drop. It is thanks to your Seventh Brother’s quick reaction, or that big truck might have taken them straight over the edge.”
Last night, when Mother Ye learned that her son had been in a car accident, she was so scared she almost fainted on the spot. Later, when she heard he was not in life-threatening danger, that he only had a broken leg and some cuts and bruises, she finally calmed down a bit.
Even so, when the people who went to handle things came back and said that the truck that had almost hit them had gone over the cliff with the driver still inside and that he died on the spot, she still broke out in a cold sweat, full of both relief and fear.
Ye Meng Zhen had only known her brother had been in a car accident and did not know the details. Hearing Mother Ye say this, she was scared too.
“Did my brother get into the accident because the truck hit him?”
“It did not hit him. If it had, could we still be standing here talking?” Mother Ye sighed. “They said the truck driver who crashed was driving tired. In the second half of the night he was hauling a full load down a mountain road and met your brother’s car when he turned a corner.”
“At the time your brother had been drinking and was sitting in the passenger seat. Your Seventh Brother was driving. When he saw that truck lose control and crash toward them, he quickly turned the wheel more to avoid it, but because of that he hit the mountain slope on the side.”
Father Ye could not help chiming in: “Good thing he was not driving fast to begin with. Otherwise, it would not just be the front of the car being crushed and trapping the two of them inside. And good thing there was another car behind them that noticed what happened, called for help, and brought them to the hospital. Otherwise, in the middle of the night, who knows how long they would have had to stay up in the mountains.”
Although this car accident for Ye Zhi Huan counted as a disaster that came out of nowhere, after seeing how terrible the scene was, they had to admit that the two of them being hurt only this much was already the best outcome in a bad situation.
But this made Ye Meng Zhen think of something else: “Mom, you said it was Seventh Brother driving when the accident happened? So my brother did not go out alone?”
The Seventh Brother she was talking about was a relative from Mother Ye’s maiden family. Because there was a “Qi” in his name and he was about the same age as Ye Zhi Huan, Ye Meng Zhen had always called him Seventh Brother.
“Yes.” Mother Ye pressed her hands together in front of her chest. “Heaven really was watching over him, letting your brother ask Ran Qi to go out with him. Otherwise, I do not even dare to think about how he would have reacted if he had been alone, after drinking, and ran into something like this.”
Ye Meng Zhen froze completely, then turned stiffly to look at Du An Rao: “This is not Heaven taking care of us. This is a benefactor helping us.”
“A benefactor? What benefactor?” Father Ye and Mother Ye looked at each other, shocked.
Ye Zhi Huan was not stupid. He reacted first and said in sudden realization: “So the reason you kept calling me during this time, Tian Tian, telling me to go out less, was because someone told you ahead of time that I would be in danger?”
Mother Ye drew in a sharp breath: “Zhen Zhen, is that true?”
“…Yes.”
“What on earth is going on?”
“Let me explain.” Seeing Ye Meng Zhen looking embarrassed and not knowing where to start, Du Yu Xi stepped forward to help her out.
Only then did the Ye family notice that there were two young girls standing next to Xi Jing Yue and Li Zhao Yang.
Father Ye looked the two of them up and down, but really could not remember who they were, so he could only ask tentatively: “This young lady is…”
“I am… cough, I am Meng Zhen’s college classmate. Half a month ago, my sister and I ran into Meng Zhen at a restaurant. My sister grew up in a Daoist temple and can see some things ordinary people cannot. She saw right away that Meng Zhen’s brother’s luck was bad recently and that he was very likely to suffer a Blood Calamity. At best he would get hurt. At worst his life could be in danger.”
“To avoid this Blood Calamity, my sister told Meng Zhen to ask her brother to go out as little as possible for the next half month. Even if he had something important and had to go out, he had to have someone with him.”
Father Ye and Mother Ye were also hearing this for the first time. They turned to look at their daughter and son questioningly: “Is that true?”
Seeing that Du Yu Xi did not mention the conflict between them that day at the restaurant, Ye Meng Zhen let out a small sigh of relief.
“It really is like that. When I first heard about it, I did not really believe it either, but since it was about my brother, I thought it was better to believe it than not…”
Ye Zhi Huan rubbed his nose and agreed: “Zhen Zhen really has called me every day about this lately. Yesterday morning I suddenly had something come up and had to go out. I was going to go alone, but right before I left, I suddenly thought about Zhen Zhen nagging me these days and, on impulse, asked Ran Qi to come with me.”
After hearing her children’s explanation, Mother Ye already believed most of it: “I wonder, your sister is…”
“Uh… that would be me.” As soon as Du An Rao finished speaking, her hand was grabbed.
Mother Ye’s eyes turned red and filled with tears. She held Du An Rao’s hand. It was smooth and soft, yet ice cold and slightly trembling.
“Thank you. Really, thank you. If you had not kindly warned us, Zhi Huan would have been in real danger today. I only have this one son and one daughter. If anything happened to him, I am afraid I would not be able to go on living.”
The words might have been similar, but when spoken by different people, they gave a completely different feeling.
Du An Rao was the worst at dealing with this kind of direct, sincere warmth from elders. Feeling awkward, she said: “Auntie, please do not say that. Miss Ye is my sister’s friend, and my sister’s friend is naturally my friend too. It was just a small effort.”
Caught off guard at suddenly becoming “friends,” Ye Meng Zhen and Du Yu Xi: “…”
Mother Ye was even more moved. Her eyes grew wetter and she gripped Du An Rao’s hand even tighter: “Good child, even so, Auntie still has to thank you properly…”
Du An Rao: “…” [Ah, help, someone save me!]
Xi Jing Yue took in Du An Rao’s pitiful little expression. The corners of his lips lifted and he decided to help her out.
“I am a little curious, though. What important business did Young Master Ye have that he just had to go out yesterday?”
