Chapter 29
Chapter 29: Got a Good Guy Card!
What?!
The Du family all turned their heads in unison to stare at the top of Director Gao’s head.
Right at that moment, a strong gust of wind suddenly blew through. While everyone was completely unprepared, it lifted the huge secret someone had been hiding for a long time.
On his sparse forehead, a few stubborn hairs fluttered in the wind. They framed the small bald patch at the very center of his scalp, which shone so brightly it almost reflected light. Under the sunlight, it gleamed like a lightbulb.
Sensing that something about the atmosphere was wrong, Director Gao reached up and touched the top of his head on reflex. His hand met that familiar smooth patch.
“…”
Silence filled the hospital tonight, and the awkwardness made the air go cold.
Director Gao stared blankly for a long time before he finally snapped out of it. His hands trembled as he let out two dry laughs: “Looks like today really isn’t a good day to…”
“Actually, doing a reading for you isn’t impossible.”
Director Gao stared in a daze for a moment before he realized what Du An Rao meant. His face lit up, and he no longer cared about his missing wig. He asked excitedly: “Really?”
Du An Rao glanced again at the black smoke gathering into a dark cloud over his head, and at the faint purple light that seemed to seep out from behind that cloud.
“What do you want to ask?”
“Of course I want to know whether this drama we’re working on can be successfully finished and broadcast, and how well it’ll do.”
Du An Rao choked and fell silent again.
[Help, how am I supposed to tell him this show is about to crash and burn because his male protagonist is about to have a scandal?]
The Du family members: “Pfft…”
The strange silence made Director Gao start to feel uneasy, but he still held on to a bit of hope: “Do I need to write a character too?”
“No need.” Du An Rao weighed her words and said in a deep, mysterious tone, “What you’re asking about is a little complicated, but you don’t need to be too nervous. I’ll give you eight characters.”
“…Which eight?”
“Ominous Clouds Overhead, Auspicious Purple Qi From the East.”
Everyone: “???”
Not only Director Gao, but everyone present was confused by those eight characters.
Director Gao thought about it for a long time and still couldn’t figure out what these eight completely opposite words were supposed to mean. In the end he had no choice but to ask Du An Rao again for help.
“…Grandmaster, could you explain it a bit more clearly?”
But Du An Rao didn’t say anything else. She only gave him a look, telling him to figure it out himself.
Director Gao: “…” Fine, the secrets of heaven can’t be revealed, right? I get it, I get it!
When their group was almost at the hospital entrance, Du An Rao suddenly stopped: “Dad, Mom, Second Brother, you and Director Gao and the others go out first. I’m going to the restroom. I’ll be right back.”
Du He Xuan didn’t feel very at ease: “Do you want me to go with you?”
“No, no. When we came upstairs, I saw the restroom sign. It’s not far.” As she spoke, Du An Rao was already running deeper into the hallway. It was obvious she really was in a hurry.
Seeing this, the others didn’t insist. They went ahead to wait for her by the doors.
Du An Rao found the restroom as fast as she could, dealt with her urgent business, and was about to leave when she unexpectedly ran into an acquaintance at the door.
“President Xi?”
“Miss Du.” Seeing her surprised face, Xi Jing Yue said: “What a coincidence. What are you doing here? Are you not feeling well?”
“No, no. One of the seniors in my second brother’s crew ran into some trouble and got hospitalized. I came with my second brother to visit him.”
“I see.”
“Why is President Xi here? Are you sick?”
“Not at all. This hospital counts as one of my family’s businesses… among others.”
Du An Rao hadn’t expected that answer and froze for a moment: “Isn’t your family the one that runs the entertainment company?”
When Xi Jing Yue heard this, he immediately knew she had gotten the wrong idea. He smiled and said: “That company is my cousin’s business. His family doesn’t run an entertainment company either. He’s just personally interested in that field, so he used money from home to invest and open one.”
It took Du An Rao a few seconds to digest what Xi Jing Yue said. Then she nodded.
[Got it, got it. Rich people love to invest. A cunning rabbit has many burrows. They have businesses everywhere.]
Xi Jing Yue: “…” [That idiom isn’t used that way.]
Looking at the man in front of her, Du An Rao suddenly remembered the guesses Zhou Shun Zhe and the others had made not long ago: “President Xi, can I ask you a question?”
Xi Jing Yue was a bit surprised. He and Du An Rao had only met a few times, and with her brother deliberately blocking him, they really couldn’t be considered familiar.
Even so, she chatted with him this easily. Did this little girl have no guard up toward anyone?
“Of course. I’m about the same age as your second brother. If you don’t mind, you can call me Brother Xi.”
Du An Rao didn’t know what he was secretly thinking, and she also didn’t call him “Brother.” Instead, she picked a more suitable form of address: “Mr. Xi, was it you who helped behind the scenes when Jiang Huai Ying was arrested?”
Even though he had been mentally prepared, Xi Jing Yue was still caught off guard by her straight ball of a question: “Why do you ask that?”
“Director Gao and the others guessed.”
“And what do you think?”
Du An Rao stared at Xi Jing Yue for quite a while, then pressed her lips together and said: “I think it was you.”
“Why?”
“Intuition.” Du An Rao couldn’t explain it either. When Zhou Shun Zhe and the others were talking about it before, she hadn’t felt anything.
But now, standing in front of this man, a strong feeling suddenly rose in her heart, telling her that yes, it really was him.
“So, was it?”
“It was.”
“Why?” This time it was Du An Rao’s turn to ask.
“Maybe because I felt guilty?”
“Guilty?”
“If I hadn’t invited you two to dinner that night, and then decided on my own to agree to Jiang Huai Ying’s request to share your table, you and your second brother wouldn’t have gotten into that conflict with her. You also wouldn’t have suffered this disaster just for offending her.”
Du An Rao had never imagined that Xi Jing Yue was thinking about it this way. If you really traced it back, he wasn’t wrong, but…
“This isn’t your fault, Mr. Xi. She already had her eye on my second brother. Even if we hadn’t gone to that restaurant that night, she would have gone after my second brother sooner or later. And back then, everyone agreed to the idea of sharing a table. You only went along with what we said. There’s no way anyone could blame you for that, right?”
Hearing that she was trying to comfort him, Xi Jing Yue smiled slightly: “You say that, but if you really look into it, there’s still some responsibility on my part. And I was the one who forced her to bow her head and apologize to you that day. If she really wanted to get revenge for that night, she shouldn’t have skipped me. In the end, she was just bullying the weak and fearing the strong, and even added the hatred she felt toward me onto you two. So strictly speaking, I’m the one who dragged you into this.”
“It’s lucky you two are all right. Otherwise, I’d feel guilty about it for the rest of my life. It’s already more than enough that you don’t blame me. Now I’m just giving a little push so that a bad person gets what she deserves. It’s simply what I should do.”
Listening to this explanation that didn’t claim any credit at all, the more Du An Rao heard, the more she felt that she hadn’t misjudged him.
[Mr. Xi really is a good person.]
Xi Jing Yue: “…” [Uh, looks like I tried too hard and just got hit with a good guy card!]
