Chapter 21
Chapter 21: The Gossip Turns Out To Be About Me?
This was exactly the question Du He Xuan had been waiting for. He lowered his head at once, pretending to think seriously.
After a while, he answered in a not-so-sure tone: “I wouldn’t say enemy, but a few days ago I did offend a certain boss in the industry.”
The female police officer pushed up the glasses on her nose and let the keys clack as she typed: “What is that person’s name? What is their position? How did you end up in conflict with them? And how did you realize something was wrong and decide to call the police?”
Before coming, Du He Xuan had already drafted everything in his head, so now he explained the whole story cleanly without any hesitation.
When she learned that a female boss named Jiang Huai Ying had tried to force hidden rules on the superstar in front of her, failed, and even suffered a secret loss, the female police officer’s hands flew over the keyboard, and her eyes shone brightly as she stared at the screen.
Even the staff who had been working on other cases, and the few little thugs arrested in the room next door, all put down what they were doing and stared over with wide, shining eyes.
Standing quietly to the side as a background prop, Du An Rao silently took a step back, putting some distance between herself and her Second Brother.
[As expected, gossiping is a habit carved into human bones. Gossip-lovers, gossip souls. The way this whole crowd of onlookers is staring over here is about to burn a hole through my Second Brother!]
Du He Xuan, long used to being in the spotlight, still felt his expression stiffen. For the first time, he truly understood what it meant to die of embarrassment in public.
Maybe realizing that her own behavior was not very professional, the female police officer gave a light cough and swept a warning glance around at everyone: “What are you all looking at? Don’t you have work to do? Other than her, have you ever had grudges with anyone else? People from before count too.”
After that, she seemed worried that Du He Xuan might still have concerns, so she added: “Don’t worry. Every word you say here and every word I record is internal confidential information. Without the permission of the person involved, it absolutely will not be revealed.”
Du An Rao secretly glanced around at all the people pretending to mind their own business, even though they kept sneaking looks over whenever they could.
[Hmm, what you write down might count as confidential, but all the things going into so many pairs of ears around us definitely are not! I strongly suspect this young lady is also a hardcore gossip-eater!]
Father Du looked up at the ceiling and Mother Du stared down at the floor, both struggling hard not to laugh.
By now, Du He Xuan was sure this matter was related to Jiang Huai Ying, so of course he would not randomly drag other people in and affect the police investigation.
He was just thinking about how to gloss over this question when a young male police officer in his early twenties ran out from the interrogation room next door.
“Sister Yao, one of the guys couldn’t take the questioning and changed his story. Those drugs weren’t prepared for Du He Xuan. They were for his sister.”
“What?” The three members of the Du family all stood up at the same time. The person actually involved, Du An Rao, however, just looked blank and only reacted after a long moment.
[What is this? Did the gossip I was watching suddenly turn out to be about me?]
But Du He Xuan had no time to think about any of that. He grabbed the young male police officer and asked in a cold voice: “He really said that? Where is he? Where is he now?”
The young officer was startled, but he understood how the victim felt and tried his best to calm him: “Don’t get too worked up yet. According to his confession, their original plan was to knock you out first and take intimate photos with you. After that, they were going to use your name to call your sister out as well, and then…”
There was no need to say what came after that. Du He Xuan’s face turned as dark as the bottom of a pot.
Earlier, when he heard that Jiang Huai Ying had used the people around him to target him, Du He Xuan had felt depressed and stifled, but it was still within what he could accept, so his mood hadn’t changed too much.
But now that he knew the real target was Du An Rao, Du He Xuan was honestly on the verge of exploding with rage.
The female police officer taking the statement tapped the table to pull everyone’s attention back: “This is an important clue. It also means our investigation range just got smaller. The person behind this is very likely a common enemy who has grudges with both you and your sister. Do you have any idea who that might be?”
“…Yes.”
“Name, identity, and reason.”
“The same person I just mentioned. As for the reason, it’s because my little sister stood up when Jiang Huai Ying was about to drag me away by force. A beauty saving the hero. She fought all eight of Jiang Huai Ying’s bodyguards by herself and rubbed that woman’s pride and sense of superiority right into the ground, so we offended her.”
The female police officer’s hand froze over the keyboard. She pulled her glasses down a little and stared at them over the frames: “Excuse me, is your sister… the one standing next to you?”
Du An Rao gave a cheeky little laugh and waved at her like a beckoning cat: “That would be me.”
In an instant, everyone’s gaze in the hall landed on Du An Rao.
Once they saw she was just a weak-looking, fragile little girl, everyone’s faces went blank.
“…” Are you all kidding me?
Facing the female police officer’s piercing “Are you really not lying to me?” stare, Du He Xuan firmly confirmed that every word he had said was true.
At last, under everyone’s dazed and curious gazes, they finally finished that day’s routine questioning.
“Next, we’ll focus on investigating that President Jiang you just mentioned. If there is any progress later, we’ll inform you right away.”
“About how long will it take to get results?”
Du He Xuan was not satisfied with this answer. Until Jiang Huai Ying was arrested, he really would not be able to relax.
“I can’t promise anything about that,” she said. “All I can say is that we’ll start investigating as soon as possible. As long as there is evidence, we will definitely bring her to justice. You can trust us on that.”
Du He Xuan frowned, about to say something more, when his own sister’s inner voice floated over at just the right time.
[They could actually check their private transfers. Someone as arrogant as Jiang Huai Ying might very well have used her own account to pay them. Even if she didn’t, they can still follow that trail to investigate.]
Du He Xuan’s eyes flashed slightly. He suddenly turned to Ni Fang, who had stayed silent in the corner the whole time, and asked: “How much did Jiang Huai Ying pay you to make you do this to me?”
Ni Fang’s whole body trembled, and the look she gave Du He Xuan grew even more vicious.
Du He Xuan really did not understand why she hated him so much, and he didn’t feel like digging into it either.
From the very start, he had never expected an answer from her mouth. When he saw the female police officer fall into deep thought and then immediately make a call to have someone check the transfer records, he knew he had reached his goal.
By the time the questioning ended, it was already late at night. Just as Du He Xuan and the others were about to walk out the doors of the police bureau, they ran right into Zhou Shun Zhe and Director Gao, who had rushed over.
“Why are you here?”
Zhou Shun Zhe grabbed the two of them in a hurry and checked them over from head to toe. Only after making sure they were both fine did he finally relax and say crossly: “News about you two has already spread everywhere outside. How could I not come?”
Du An Rao and Du He Xuan exchanged a look and asked: “What news?”
Zhou Shun Zhe simply pulled out his phone and held it in front of them: “See for yourselves.”
The four members of the Du family hurried over to look. With one glance, they saw that when they had just gotten out of the car and walked in earlier, some paparazzi had secretly taken a photo of them. Paired with this picture, the other side had written a shocking headline.
“Film Emperor Du He Xuan Suspected Of Being Arrested Over A PY Deal”
Du He Xuan: “???”
