Chapter 141
Chapter 141: Can You Be A Little More Reliable?
The Nanny had heard the noises upstairs from the first floor and finally rushed up.
When she saw this group gathered in Elder Madam’s room, she immediately remembered what someone had told her earlier and quietly slid her hand into her pocket.
“What are you all doing up here? Didn’t we agree that you’re not allowed on the second floor? Well, I knew you people had bad intentions. You waited until the host wasn’t home and came up here to steal. Just you wait. I’ve already called the police. None of you are getting away today!”
“Call the police? Good. You’d better call them. I’d like to see who the police take away.” Du De Sheng gripped his lover’s hand and said with heartache: “She’s the one who locked you up here, isn’t she? Don’t be afraid. I’m here. I’ll definitely get justice for you today.”
The corner of Du An Rao’s mouth twitched: “Grandfather, how about we get this Grandma out of here first and talk later.”
But Grandma Qin’s focus was a bit off: “Grandfather? You already have a granddaughter?”
Du De Sheng’s whole body jolted. He hurried to explain: “No, no, no, let me explain. She’s just a distant junior of mine, not my real granddaughter.”
Du An Rao reacted quickly too: “Right, right, Granduncle. This woman really doesn’t dare call the police, but everyone in this village knows their family well. Their relatives and neighbors are very united. If this really blows up, we might all end up trapped here.”
[That was close. One less word and we almost had a family crisis. But can you two please wait until we’re outside to catch up? You’re already so old, and I, the junior, have to act as your love security guard. Can you be a little more reliable?]
“You…” Grandma Qin suddenly widened her eyes, pointed at Du An Rao, and couldn’t get any words out.
Seeing this, Du De Sheng more or less guessed what she had realized. He gave a little laugh: “I’ll explain everything to you later. It’s not safe here. Let’s leave first.”
“It’s not that easy to leave.” By now, the nanny auntie was sure that Du An Rao and the others were on Grandma Qin’s side.
She did not think about Grandma Qin’s old friends at all. She just saw Du An Rao and the others as Qin Family relatives who had come to steal the painting. Her face twisted with anger as she raised a knife and rushed at them.
Uncle A’Ming, tall and sturdy, finally had some use for all his years on the job. Before the nanny auntie could reach Du An Rao and the others, he stepped forward, knocked the knife out of her hand, and kicked her out of the room.
Just then, Qin Shou Ye, who had gone out to enjoy himself for a while, happened to walk through his own courtyard gate. Behind him were several middle-aged uncles, their faces red and excited.
“Shou Ye, was what you just said really true? Those people who came to our village this afternoon, they really offered thirty thousand in one go?”
“Didn’t I show you just now? How could that be fake? Don’t blame me, this junior, for getting a good thing and not thinking of you. They brought so many people, and my uncle-in-law’s house is so small. It definitely can’t hold them all. The rest of them must have ended up at some lucky people’s homes. If you go ask them now, you might pick up one or two who got separated. That’s all money!”
The men looked at each other, clearly tempted.
“But I heard the ones in charge are all staying at your house. The rest are just their workers. They probably don’t have much money, right?”
“Even a mosquito is still meat. No matter how poor they are, they’re richer than us. And people like them, who work as bodyguards, have all their food, clothing, and travel paid for when they go out. If you’re worried they’ll think it’s too expensive, just ask for less. Five or six hundred should be fine, right?”
“Five or six hundred is already a lot. Letting them stay three or four days would be almost a month’s wages for me.”
The group was happily talking about money when Nanny Auntie heard Qin Shou Ye’s voice. She suddenly perked up. Ignoring the pain in her stomach from that kick, she half rolled, half crawled to the stairs and shouted: “Qin boy, they’re stealing her! Those people from another village ran upstairs to snatch her!”
Still enjoying the way everyone circled around him in the yard, Qin Shou Ye’s face changed: “What? They went upstairs to snatch her?”
He rushed inside, leaving the others behind.
The crowd in the yard froze, then after a while said: “Those outsiders really do have a problem. Go find more people to help.”
Some of them followed him in to help, and some turned and ran out to find others.
What Du An Rao worried about most finally came true. They had just helped Elder Madam out of the room when Qin Shou Ye and a group of villagers chased them up to the second floor.
“Aunt Sun, are you okay?”
“I’m fine.” Nanny Auntie had been kicked so hard by A’Ming that she couldn’t even stand up straight. Her face was pale. “These people sneaked upstairs while I was down there. They tried to take your grandmother away. When I caught them, they even hit me.”
“This is outrageous. They actually came into my house to snatch people. Uncles, you all heard that, right? These outsiders are nothing but robbers and bandits. We can’t let them just take my grandmother away.”
Grandma Qin knew most of these villagers had only been fooled and used by Qin Shou Ye’s family. They had not really taken part in imprisoning her. So right now, she stepped out and scolded Qin Shou Ye directly.
“Who is your grandmother? You brought me here, locked me up, and abused me. Now you even want to slander the people who came to save me. The ones who are truly lawless are you!”
The people from Liu Family Village who had followed Qin Shou Ye stood there with blank faces, looking at each other.
A cold light flashed in Qin Shou Ye’s eyes, but he showed only worry and sadness on his face: “My grandmother is old. Her mind went years ago, and she likes to wander around. My parents didn’t feel safe leaving her alone at home, so they hired a nanny to take care of her.”
“She can’t tell who is bad and who is good anymore. These people must have taken advantage of that and said things to stir up trouble and trick her. Uncles, you absolutely can’t let them take my grandmother away. Who knows what they want to do with her?”
Qin Shou Ye had lived in the same village as these people for over twenty years. Naturally, his words sounded more believable than the strangers’. The people from Liu Family Village, who had started to waver, immediately switched sides.
“Shou Ye is right. No matter what they want, we can’t let them just take her away today.”
“Yeah, keep her here.”
“Keep her here.”
Du An Rao looked at the numbers on each side and frowned, then reminded everyone: “Don’t waste time arguing with them. Let’s go quickly. If we wait, more people will come, and we really won’t be able to leave.”
As soon as she finished speaking, they heard the Village Chief’s voice outside: “What’s going on?”
A large, noisy crowd of footsteps followed. Just from the sound, they could tell many people were coming.
In an instant, everyone on Du De Sheng’s side turned to look at Du An Rao.
Du An Rao: “…”
[Come on. Whenever something big happens in a village, a whole crowd of relatives shows up to help, plus endless nosy onlookers. That’s common sense. You city folks, who don’t eat worldly smoke and fire, really haven’t seen much. Why are you all looking at me like my crow’s mouth summoned them? You act like you’ve never seen this before!]
The inexperienced crowd: “…” Fine.
