Chapter 12
Chapter 12: My Head Is About To Grow A Brain!
Du He Xuan knew the Director only dared to scold his own sister with words and would not really do anything, so he did not rush in blindly to defend her.
More importantly, after what happened today, there was no guarantee that people would not run over out of curiosity and ask Du An Rao to tell their fortunes.
Now that the Director had given everyone a verbal warning, at least his sister’s immortal, mysterious expert image was safe for the moment.
Only after the Director and Yang Jian Tao left, and there were just the two Du siblings on set, did Du An Rao finally let out the breath she had been holding.
“That scared me to death, I felt like Brother Yang almost couldn’t help hitting me just now.”
“…Take the ‘felt like’ out. He really did want to hit you.”
“If he really tried to hit me, would you save me, big brother?”
“…I’d stop him. I wouldn’t let him beat you to death.”
Du An Rao looked at Du He Xuan with suddenly more grievance in her eyes. They had talked about being each other’s angels, yet halfway through he kicked her off the cliff. How could he cheat her like this?
Du He Xuan laughed: “I was joking. Relax, Brother Yang isn’t that petty, and your second brother would never let anyone hurt a single hair on your head.”
“That’s more like it. But Second Brother, how did you even know I would do readings for people?” Du An Rao narrowed her eyes at him in doubt, then said: “You didn’t happen to…”
Cold sweat almost slid down Du He Xuan’s back. He hurried to say: “What nonsense are you imagining? That day after you came home, Mom couldn’t wait to tell everyone in the family about how you stood up for Yu Xi in the restaurant. She talked about it like some kind of legend, full of sound and color. The few of us were stunned listening.”
“Just now, when I heard Brother Yang mention it, I don’t know why, but that story suddenly popped into my head…”
When he said this, Du He Xuan showed a perfectly timed curious look: “What you said just now, was all of it true? Is Brother Yang really in danger?”
There was no denying it. There was a reason Du He Xuan had so many Film Emperor awards. His acting really was flawless.
Du An Rao had just tricked Yang Jian Tao until he was dizzy, yet now she could not see even the tiniest crack in her second brother’s expression.
[Looks like I really thought too much. Even though it’s a coincidence, maybe heaven really couldn’t stand it and gave things a little push in secret? Forget it, having a big boss in the mix is still a good thing.]
Once she thought it through, Du An Rao stopped struggling over it and pulled out the same line she had used earlier to fool Mother Du and the others.
“The secrets of the Tian Ji Star cannot be revealed, everything in this world already has its fate. If you believe it, it exists. If you do not, it does not. Amitabha Buddha, good, good.”
Du He Xuan: …
To him, she sounded even more like a con artist. And she had grown up in a Daoist temple, so why did she chant a Buddhist name so fluently? His head suddenly itched. It felt like his brain was about to grow a new one.
Just as Du He Xuan had guessed, because of the little scene in the morning, many people now looked at Du An Rao with curiosity and a bit of eagerness in their eyes. But remembering the Director’s earlier warning, no one actually dared to walk over and ask her to do a reading.
Even without that, as Du He Xuan’s real sister, Du An Rao was already someone both lead and supporting actors in the crew wanted to please. On top of that, she was born with a sweet, likable face. Whoever came to say hello got her smiling eyes and honeyed words in return.
A few actresses who had originally come with a purpose were coaxed by her until their hearts bloomed. In no time, they were familiar with her, treating her like a little sister and stuffing her with snacks like crazy.
Because of that, on her first day in the crew, Du An Rao basically did nothing. She crossed her small legs and sat under the little tent and umbrella the crew had set up for her second brother, eating snacks and fruit, sipping juice and milk tea. When she got bored and sleepy, she could even take a little nap. She was completely at ease.
After rushing to finish that day’s shooting, Du He Xuan came back and saw this scene. He felt both annoyed and amused.
His agent, Zhou Shun Zhe, was a handsome “uncle” in his early thirties. He wore a crisp striped suit and a pair of gold-rimmed glasses, giving off a bit of that refined but roguish vibe.
When Du An Rao fell asleep, he sat next to her keeping watch. Seeing Du He Xuan walk over, his expression was hard to describe.
“You told me to take care of her, but I think she can take care of herself just fine. Is she really your biological sister?”
Du He Xuan rolled his eyes: “Same father, same mother, same home. What do you think?”
Zhou Shun Zhe let out a long sigh: “How can kids from the same belly be this different? If you had been as sharp as her back then, the two of us brothers would’ve taken so many fewer detours.”
As he spoke, he even sounded a bit jealous: “Your sister really doesn’t plan to enter the entertainment industry? Her kind of pure, ‘little white flower’ type is rare in the circle. With just a bit of packaging, she would definitely blow up in popularity. No need to let such a good thing go to outsiders…”
“Stop having ideas about her. She has no interest in that.”
“Then what is she interested in? Doing fortune-telling for people?”
Du He Xuan suddenly remembered how Du An Rao had said she wanted to go back and inherit the Daoist temple, and his eyelid twitched hard.
Right then, hearing them talking, Du An Rao woke up.
“Second Brother, you’re done shooting?” Du An Rao rubbed her eyes and looked around in a daze. She found that almost everyone had already left. “Where’s Brother Yang?”
“He lives in this city, close by. He already went home.”
“Oh. Then we…”
“He Xuan.” Before she could finish, the Director hurried over and cut her off.
“Good, you haven’t left yet. Let me introduce you. This is the biggest investor in our drama, Mr. Xi. Mr. Xi, this is Du He Xuan, Mr. Du.”
Walking behind the Director, Xi Jing Yue finally got a chance to get close to Du An Rao. He stepped forward and took the initiative to shake Du He Xuan’s hand. His mouth said he had admired him for a long time, but his eyes could not help glancing at Du An Rao twice more.
Xi Jing Yue thought his little move was well hidden, but this scene fell right into Du He Xuan’s eyes. He stepped forward at once, blocking his sister completely behind him.
But Du An Rao did not understand her brother’s good intentions at all. She actively poked her head out from behind him and stared at Xi Jing Yue, looking thoughtful.
[This handsome guy looks kind of familiar. I feel like I’ve seen him somewhere before.]
When Du He Xuan heard that, he became even more wary. Xi Jing Yue, on the other hand, felt a little disappointed. It had only been a few days, and all he got was “you look familiar”!
“I’ve long heard of Film Emperor Du’s great name. Tonight I’ll be the host. I wonder if I might have the honor of inviting Film Emperor Du and Director Gao to have a simple meal together?” Xi Jing Yue said with a polite smile.
Du He Xuan’s eyes flickered: “That wouldn’t be very appropriate, would it? I’m only here for a guest role.”
The hidden meaning was, if you want to invite someone to dinner, you should go find this drama’s main lead. Why bother inviting a guest star who will only be here for a few days?
“Today I came especially because I admire you. It doesn’t have much to do with the crew,” Xi Jing Yue replied.
In other words, he had come purely for Du He Xuan. He did not even put the small-budget drama’s newcomer male lead in his eyes.
Pei Yi Yuan, who had rushed over after hearing that the biggest patron had come to the set, happened to hear this. His delicate, handsome face twisted at once with jealousy, and his gaze toward Du He Xuan was filled with even more hatred.
Hidden behind Du He Xuan, Du An Rao peeked at one man and then the other, her expression growing more and more serious.
[This President Xi isn’t planning to…]
The two men suddenly stopped talking, both pricking up their ears, wanting to hear what Du An Rao had thought of now.
[Try to take advantage of my second brother, right?! Oh my gosh, is your entertainment industry really this not picky about men or women?]
