Chapter 40
Chapter 40: She Saw the Scene From a Few Minutes Later
“I… I still wanted to come see you.” Jiang Shi Yue rarely looked so hesitant. She couldn’t help asking softly, “Brother, do you feel any better?”
“I’m fine.” Jiang Han Sheng still had that smile in his eyes and brows. Only, there was a faint sadness in his voice, but it vanished in an instant and turned into warm concern again. “Even if I can’t stay with you, we still have Aunt Ru at home. She… she’s a good person. With her taking care of you, I can rest easy.”
Mother died early. When they had just turned one year old, she left them forever. For him and his sister, their image of Mother was only a photograph, but toward Chen Xue Ru, their feelings were far more complicated.
Jiang Shi Yue nodded. At this moment, she didn’t know what to say.
She just looked at him quietly.
Five years ago, her brother had still been normal, still healthy. How did he suddenly become ill?
What had happened?
Or what kind of shock had he suffered?
Jiang Shi Yue tried hard to search her memory. She knew her memories should have been complete, yet she found nothing but blankness.
About why Jiang Han Sheng became sick, she knew nothing at all.
“School starts next month, right? Study hard at school, don’t cause trouble, eat properly, exercise more. Brother will work hard to cooperate with the treatment and try to get out early to take care of you…” Jiang Han Sheng still spoke gently. He was only five minutes older than her, yet he talked like an elder, and he couldn’t help giving her one reminder after another.
“Brother, I know.” Jiang Shi Yue’s eyes curved as she spoke obediently. “I never cause trouble…”
But before her words had fully fallen, her body suddenly went rigid, and her pupils tightened by instinct, because… she saw what would happen a few minutes later.
“Miss Jiang.” Someone suddenly called Jiang Shi Yue softly.
Jiang Shi Yue shifted her gaze and saw a young nurse hurrying over.
The young nurse wasn’t very old. Her features were delicate, like she had just graduated from college, yet she looked calm and steady.
She walked up to Jiang Shi Yue, smiled faintly, and reminded her in a low voice, “Miss Jiang, visiting hours are almost over.”
“I know.” Jiang Shi Yue nodded. Her gaze stayed on the young nurse for a moment. Only after she got closer did she catch that faint perfume on the young nurse, drifting in and out like some kind of floral scent. It wasn’t sweet or heavy at all. Instead, it was especially fresh, giving the girl an indescribable charm.
Jiang Shi Yue asked, “Can you wear perfume to work?”
“Actually… we can’t.” The young nurse’s cheeks reddened. She hesitated for a few seconds and said, as if she wanted to speak but held back, “I have a date with my boyfriend later.”
Jiang Shi Yue smiled lightly. She lifted her eyes to look at her and asked another question, “Your perfume smells really nice. Can you tell me what brand it is?”
“It’s actually a fragrance my boyfriend blended by hand.” When she said this, the young nurse became even more shy, but she still couldn’t stop herself from sharing with a trace of sweetness.
But then she realized Jiang Shi Yue wasn’t looking at her at all. She was looking at Jiang Han Sheng.
It was almost visible to the naked eye. Jiang Han Sheng’s expression suddenly changed at that moment. The book in his hand dropped to the floor with a slap. He probably liked that book a lot. Both the cover and the pages were clean and spotless, but the instant it hit the ground, it was stained with dust.
