Chapter 29: Entering the Heart Mirror of Insight
When Wei Yun Qing reached the gates of the Grand Righteous Sect, her gaze instantly fell on Wei Yun Xi—it could only be said that she cared far too much about this younger sister.
Wei Yun Ting and Wei Zong Han followed Wei Yun Qing’s pointing finger, quickly spotting their younger brother and sister who had fallen behind earlier. Both looked even more spirited than the rest and were chatting quietly.
Wei Yun Qing rushed forward without hesitation, demanding loudly, “Why did you get here before us?”
Wei Yun Xi and Wei Zong Hao grew annoyed at once. How could arriving earlier become their fault?
Standing up from the ground, Wei Yun Xi ignored Wei Yun Qing and spoke directly to Wei Yun Ting, their squad leader, “Eldest sister, Zong Hao and I were chased by the spirit weasel group. Eventually, we couldn’t run anymore, so we hid in the forest beside the road and got separated from everyone.”
Zong Hao also stood up, adding, “It was my fault—I couldn’t run any longer. Younger sister Yun Xi wouldn’t abandon me, so she stayed by my side. Once the spirit weasels left, we followed the path trying to catch up, but at night we encountered the Jade Eyed wolf pack and had to circle around them. After that, we lost your tracks and could only move towards the sect’s direction, hoping we’d meet you on the way. Who knew we’d arrive first! We were worried you wouldn’t get here on time!”
The mention of “spirit weasel group” and “Jade Eyed wolf pack” immediately drew everyone’s eyes toward Wei Yun Qing. She desperately wanted to silence Wei Zong Hao but couldn’t act openly.
Wei Yun Xi, who had known the truth all along, feigned innocence and asked curiously, “Eldest sister, when we got separated, we noticed the spirit weasels only chased our Wei clan’s squad. Who provoked them?”
Wei Yun Ying rolled her eyes irritably and replied, “Who else could it be? It was your good elder sister who caught a spirit weasel cub and got us chased all the way. The Jade Eyed wolves were also her doing—she burned spirit jade wood as firewood and attracted them, trapping us overnight. We left an hour late the next morning and ended up missing you.”
Wei Yun Xi pretended shock and stared at Wei Yun Qing, as if she never imagined someone with such exceptional talent could make such foolish mistakes, leaving Wei Yun Qing embarrassed and furious.
Wei Zong Hao spoke sarcastically in a raised voice, “No wonder you arrived so late—it looks like someone was holding everyone back.”
“What did you say?” Wei Yun Qing snapped.
“Am I wrong? Wasn’t it because of you that Yun Ting and everyone else got delayed?” Wei Zong Hao refused to back down.
Wei Yun Ting frowned and intervened, “Enough! Both of you stop arguing—do you want others to mock the Wei clan?”
Wei Zong Hao immediately shifted his attention away from Wei Yun Qing, calling out to Wei Zong Yu instead, “Zong Yu, come sit here!”
Wei Zong Yu was exhausted, silently coming over and sitting next to Little Fatty. He intended to meditate, but Wei Zong Hao relentlessly pestered him, asking about their experiences along the way.
Wei Yun Ying took the initiative to sit next to Wei Yun Xi and asked about their journey. Wei Yun Xi had earlier agreed with Wei Zong Hao not to mention the little Red Maned colt, only discussing things safe to reveal. Especially when they mentioned using Weiwei grass juice to avoid spirit beasts, the other Wei clan disciples deeply regretted not sticking with the two.
Thus, Wei Yun Qing became the isolated one. The gaze she turned upon Wei Yun Xi grew darker; after all, a five-year-old child hadn’t yet mastered concealing her feelings.
The hidden observers watching the scene clearly sighed inwardly. Despite her excellent aptitude, this Wei family girl’s character was severely lacking.
Before sunset, three final children stumbled into the mountain gate. Wei Yun Xi carefully observed but did not see the mortal girl who had previously gone to relieve herself with Wei Yun Qing.
Song Ke appeared again in front of the children who had passed the first trial, smiling warmly, “Congratulations on completing the first test of physical endurance. Now, you need only pass through this ‘Heart Mirror of Insight’ to successfully complete the second round of assessment.”
As he spoke, Song Ke flicked his sleeve. A mirror two meters tall and one meter wide appeared at the mountain gate’s entrance. The mirror frame was crafted from meteorite iron, adorned with cloud patterns and mysterious symbols Wei Yun Xi didn’t recognize yet—later, she’d learn these were array runes.
The mirror clearly reflected every child standing before it, magnifying even their smallest expressions. No one dared step forward.
At this moment, Wei Yun Qing confidently stepped out first, walking toward the Heart Mirror of Insight.
Everyone watched as she calmly passed through the mirror, her figure disappearing as the mirror rippled briefly before returning to its tranquil state, as if nobody had entered at all.
Wei Yun Xi thought it unlucky to follow directly after Wei Yun Qing, fearing being implicated. Her choice proved wise.
Wei Yun Ting entered second, clearly displeased with Wei Yun Qing’s attention-seeking behavior, though she didn’t speak of it.
Wei Yun Xi and Wei Zong Hao were the last from the Wei clan to enter the Heart Mirror of Insight.
After stepping through the mirror, Wei Yun Xi felt a brief wave of dizziness. When she regained her senses, she found herself chained to a wall in what seemed like a dungeon.
She frowned and struggled, but the chains were unbreakable.
Footsteps approached, and soon she saw an adult version of Wei Yun Qing, accompanied by a tall, extraordinary-looking man. The two appeared perfectly matched.
Wei Yun Xi sensed something was off but couldn’t pinpoint it.
Wei Yun Qing gazed at her with pity, making Wei Yun Xi long to claw out those eyes. Coldly, Wei Yun Xi snapped, “What are you staring at?”
Wei Yun Qing paused, replying sadly, “Younger sister, this time your crime is too grave—the sect won’t forgive you.”
“Nonsense! What did I do? Stop pretending with your fake sympathy!” Wei Yun Xi retorted defiantly.
The man beside Wei Yun Qing frowned in disgust, remarking, “Singer, even though she’s your sister, she’s still the villain who harmed you. It’s already generous of you to see her one last time. She deserves the punishment that awaits.”
“But she’s my younger sister, after all—”
“Precisely because she’s your sister, you cannot shield her. If you hadn’t risked yourself to stop her, you wouldn’t have injured your foundation. Now it’s her turn to pay for her sins.” His voice was resolute as he embraced Wei Yun Qing, preventing her from stopping what was about to happen.
Wei Yun Xi’s eyes widened as realization dawned. This was the final scene she’d read before transmigrating—the female supporting character had her spiritual root extracted and her golden core stolen. But hadn’t she transmigrated into Wei Yun Xi at age five, not this grown version? No wonder it felt strange.
In this moment of understanding, the surroundings flickered subtly and then settled again. Wei Yun Xi narrowed her eyes, boldly confronting the pair who were still showing affection, “You two are shameless—one planning to use wicked methods to steal my spiritual root and golden core, the other coveting my aptitude! Do you really think Heaven’s Will would spare you?”
Wei Yun Xi sneered coldly, continuing, “Wei Yun Qing, even if you ascend, it’ll only be because you stole from me. You’ll never surpass me!”
