Chapter 526
Chapter 526: What Was More Terrifying Than the Sunspawn…
As more Intruders appeared one after another, far more than expected, Heidi actually grew more and more nervous inside.
She knew that these not-quite-human “things” before her were far stronger than the cultist she had dealt with earlier. That cultist had only been a human who had made a contract with demons from the Abyssal Deep. Even if he had some skills, in essence he was still just a fragile mortal. Inside her own “professional field”, he had not been too hard to handle.
But these black?clad “people” were different – they were not human at all.
They were the Sunspawn’s “residue”, envoys and blood?kin split off from that misshapen terror hanging in the sky. In essence, these things were even part of the creeping Sun Wheel itself, an extension of an Elder God’s power.
These creatures had no normal mental activity and no personality structure a mortal could understand. The knowledge and techniques Heidi had as a “psychiatrist” were very limited when it came to enemies like this.
But Miss Psychiatrist still took a deep breath, calmed herself, and tightened her grip on the golden awl in her hand.
The Sunspawn did not accept negotiations with mortals. Their hatred of sentient beings was unconditional and without distinction. There was nothing to do but meet them head?on.
Besides… there was a powerful witch here. Lady Lucretia seemed to know her father. Lucretia was a bit frightening, but in a situation like this, she probably would not just watch Heidi die here… right?
That wild thought flashed through her mind and vanished. In the next second, Heidi noticed one of the black?clad “people” blur in her field of view – a sharp sense of danger crashed over her.
That blurry black shape vanished into the air. Almost at the same time, Heidi felt a stabbing pain in her abdomen. She slowly lowered her head and saw a tentacle thrust through her torso, tearing open a wound large enough to be fatal.
Only then did the attacker’s hazy figure faintly appear at the other end of that tentacle.
A golden awl stabbed over from the side. One of her personality’s avatar forms pounced toward the tentacle, driving the awl down through the air in a vicious thrust that hit that dim, hazy figure. The attacker took some damage and let out a strange shriek as it staggered back.
Heidi’s body slowly toppled to the side, but before it hit the ground, her primary consciousness had already shifted into another personality avatar form nearby. At the instant the shift finished, she swung the golden awl in that avatar’s hand, stabbing at another shadow lunging straight toward her.
At the same time, she quickly raised the revolver in her other hand, pressed the muzzle to her temple, and pulled the trigger without hesitation.
A new Personality Split appeared behind her, quickly filling the gap left by the mind entity she had just lost.
At the same time, more of the black?clad figures charged at the clearly more threatening person on the field, Lucretia. Shadows streaked through the forest as if slipping through cracks between light and dark. All kinds of visible and invisible forces swarmed toward the spot where Lucretia stood, tearing the air, shattering the ground, and leaving behind corruption.
Lucretia’s figure, however, was like an illusion. She drifted lightly through all the attacks and quickly closed in behind one of the assailants. Before that black?clad freak could react, she had already laid a fingertip near its shoulder.
The freak let out a sharp screech. With that unbearable, piercing noise that almost no human could endure, a string of muddled words seemed to echo directly in their minds and entered the minds of both Heidi and Lucretia at the same time: “You have seen Him. You must die here!”
“ No one wants to look at your twisted, disgusting ‘kin’,” Lucretia only shook her head coldly. “Now, it is time to bloom.”
The black?clad freak suddenly raised its arm. Invisible shadows gathered inside its coat, taking on the shape of some kind of weapon, but Lucretia had already drifted back several meters.
At the spot her fingertip had tapped, a strange patch of color suddenly appeared on the “person’s” shoulder. In the next moment, that color, like spilled paint, quickly spread and came alive, turning in the blink of an eye into countless bright flowers and wildly growing vines. Thick, tangled plants grew out from inside that not?quite?human body. With the sickening sounds of flesh being torn and ground apart, they devoured this piece of Sunspawn residue in an instant.
Yet as this attacker fell, more rustling noises and the gathered breath of shadows came from all directions.
Under the sunlight, between the dense trees, several more tall figures in black coats appeared out of thin air. They gave off a weird, ominous aura as they stepped toward Lucretia and Heidi, closing in and forming a ring around them.
And behind those figures, where the sunlight fell, even more shadows were gathering. More attackers were entering this dream.
Lucretia frowned without thinking, but before she could figure out how these attackers were flooding into this “dream” in such numbers, new attacks had already arrived.
Several black?clad freaks slipped through the seams between light and shadow and appeared beside her in an instant.
Lucretia had already been prepared. The moment the enemies appeared, the “conductor’s baton” was once again in her hand, and she pointed it at the nearest one. But just as she was about to unleash the curse, a wave of light dizziness suddenly struck and slowed her movements.
A sharp wind roared past her ear. At the instant she was about to be struck, Lucretia tore herself free of that dizziness and burst apart into countless fluttering colored paper scraps that flew to the side. Her figure then emerged from the colors, and she immediately looked toward a certain direction.
A patch of blurred, twisting smoke became visible under her gaze. The smoke swelled and writhed in the air like a strangely shaped jellyfish. From inside that jellyfish extended a pitch?black chain that reached out to a young man who was appearing out of thin air.
Almost at the same time, one of Heidi’s personality avatar forms suffered a heavy blow. An invisible force hurled her away, ripping almost half of that body apart. But before that avatar form could disperse, she still forced herself to lift her hand and fired three shots in a row at the Smokewisp Jellyfish that had appeared out of nowhere.
“ Lady Lucretia! This is the Intruder I told you about!”
“ You do not have to talk to me in such a tragic way.” Lucretia watched, expressionless, as that personality avatar form fell to the ground not far in front of her and slowly faded with eyes that could not close in peace. She could not help muttering under her breath, then suddenly raised the “conductor’s baton” in her hand to block a sharp, stabbing tentacle aimed at her. At the same time, she looked up at the Annihilator who had only now chosen to reveal himself: “So the madman who follows the Abyssal Lord has joined hands with the madman who follows the Black Sun?”
“ I originally had no intention of showing myself, but it seems our ‘temporary ally’ really does need a little help now…”
The Annihilator stood on a high spot, still wearing the blue uniform of a “medical facility staffer”, though his face had completely changed. He smiled with easy leisure as he spoke. The three shots Heidi’s personality avatar form had fired before its death had not harmed the Smokewisp Jellyfish at all. His gaze swept over the psychiatrist and the Sea Witch, who were beginning to show signs of strain under the Sunspawn residue’s siege. Then he raised his head and looked at the terrifying Sunspawn hanging in the sky, giving a small nod.
“ I hope you keep your promise. We will keep ‘digging deeper’.”
The “Sun” hanging high and still in the sky gave no response, but the “sunlight” that covered the whole forest clearly grew a few degrees hotter.
Keep your promise? Dig deeper?
Lucretia instantly latched onto those two phrases the Annihilator had mentioned, but before she could think them through, another black “residue” had already teleported to her side.
Using a sneaky blind spot, the freak lifted its arm. Several “limbs” lined with sharp blades and spikes swept sideways toward Lucretia.
Lucretia’s figure suddenly dissolved into colors and reformed a few meters away. At the same time she raised the conductor’s baton and pointed it at the enemy from afar.
Yet in the next second, the “enemy” in her eyes blurred and shifted, turning into a different figure.
Tyrian now stood there, looking toward her with a stunned expression.
“ Lucy, you are in trouble…”
But the conductor’s baton in Lucretia’s hand suddenly turned into an oversized scythe. She raised the terrible weapon high and, without the slightest hesitation, brought it down toward “Tyrian’s” head.
“ This is the best you can do?” As the enemy was sliced cleanly in two by the scythe, a few drops of blood spattered onto Lucretia’s face. She smiled, turned her head, and looked toward the Annihilator standing in the distance. “Are you so used to bullying ordinary people with weak minds that you think this will work on me?”
The Annihilator did not answer. Instead, the Smokewisp Jellyfish floating beside him suddenly contracted and swelled. At the same time, wind hissed by Lucretia’s ear. She turned her head and saw her clockwork doll Lunie, who had served her for many years, standing not far away with a dazed, frightened look.
The giant scythe rose and fell without a pause, chopping Lunie’s figure into a scattering of gears and ceramic shards. Before those disturbing fragments hit the ground, they turned into foul, filthy flesh.
In the next second, Taran Ael’s figure replaced that of a “black?clad residue” and appeared in front of Lucretia.
She again raised her hand and swung the scythe without hesitation, and as she kept swinging, she took step after step toward the Annihilator who was disrupting the battlefield.
The rabbit Rabby appeared and was cut cleanly in half without a second thought.
Lightwind Harbor’s governor, Sara Mell, appeared in front of her, and once more the scythe came down in a single stroke.
Looking at the Annihilator, who was gradually showing real panic on his face, the Sea Witch had only a trace of contempt in her eyes.
Another light crackling sound came from nearby. Lucretia looked up and saw her father appear in front of her.
She finally hesitated. The deep?rooted tension and fear almost carved into her soul made her stop for the first time.
But in the next second, she still shook her head hard, throwing off all hesitation, and raised the scythe high.
“ Your psychological attacks are improving, but they are still far from enough!”
The scythe swung down.
Lucretia did not notice the brief flash of dazed confusion on the Annihilator’s face in the distance.
She saw ghostly green flame suddenly and spontaneously ignite along the blade and haft of her scythe.
The “phantom of Father” in front of her raised his hand, caught the edge of the scythe, and looked at her in surprise.
“ Lucy, are you half?asleep?”
Lucretia froze in place.
This one… was real.
To be honest, saving up these five chapters of drafts cost me a ridiculous amount of effort…
In this past half year, things in my Mortal Realm life have kept piling up. I really had no way to keep a stable two?chapters?a?day pace, and I did not even know how much time I would have to write each day. So I thought I would try my best, and even if I could only erupt once, that would be something. I worked hard to save up some drafts, so at least it could be a bigger surprise.
Also, don’t worry, I am not taking a day off tomorrow.
And last of all, please give me a monthly ticket~~)
