Chapter 112: Little Hamster Cast onto the Streets
Cloud Link City.
Demonic Beast Hunting Grounds.
One handler said: “These are all the newly transported demonic beasts. There are even a few spirit beasts among them.”
Another replied: “Mm, let me check them in first.”
Someone peered at a crate and blurted: “There is even such a small rat-type demonic beast?”
They checked the cage again; there was indeed a fluctuation of demonic beast aura inside. After confirming there was no problem, group after group of demonic beasts was hauled into the grounds and locked up in batches. While setting the cages down, a few staff were heavy-handed and made a lot of noise.
Those noises startled a certain Little Hamster who had been sleeping in a cage all along.
[Where is this?]
His muddled brain tried to recall, bit by bit. Yet the few remaining fragments of memory had vanished completely. He only remembered that after waking up, it seemed he had crawled into this cage and fallen asleep.
Staring at the padlock on the cage, Little Hamster grew unhappy: [I do not like being locked.]
He did not know why he disliked it. Just thinking of it sent a surge of irritability up from his chest. Little Hamster instinctively used the last trace of lightning qi in his body and split the lock apart. Then he shuffled his small body to the door of the cage and pushed with his little paw.
The door swung open.
Because the cage was small and Little Hamster himself looked utterly unremarkable, the cage had been carelessly left in a corner. Once he hopped out, Little Hamster was at a loss again.
[Where should I go?]
He wandered aimlessly through the hunting grounds, glancing east and west. Whenever he ran into people, he instinctively hid. But every time he hid, Little Hamster felt confused.
[Why am I so practiced at this?]
He thought about it twice and could not figure it out, so he stopped thinking and kept walking. After a while, Little Hamster spotted a little hole at the base of a wall, just big enough for his small body to squeeze through. So he wriggled in.
When he emerged on the other side, a jumble of noisy sounds rushed at him. Still keeping the human habit of standing upright on two legs, his two front paws suddenly had nowhere to go. His gaze turned even more dazed as he stared at the bustling street filled with people coming and going.
[Which way should I go?]
[North?]
The word surfaced from his subconscious. Little Hamster tilted his head.
[Which way is north?]
After looking left and right, Little Hamster still could not be sure and chose a direction at random.
Only, there were too many people on the street. Little Hamster was far too small; if he was not careful, someone might step on him. If he was discovered, especially by some timid woman who noticed something zip past her feet, there would be a sharp scream.
“Ah!”
“Something just ran by!”
“…”
Hearing these voices made Little Hamster feel stifled and irritable. Yet the last of his lightning power had been spent breaking the lock. Now he was no different from an ordinary, weak Little Hamster, at the mercy of others.
In the end, Little Hamster darted into a deserted, out-of-the-way alley. But before he could rest, an odd rustling came from a pile of trash not far away.
Little Hamster jolted all over.
Two green-eyed black cats slipped out. One feral cat stared straight at him, drool stringing as it kept licking its lips.
Seeing that covetous gaze made Little Hamster’s soft fur stand on end. But such posturing meant nothing before two feral cats.
Both cats pounced.
Just as they were about to land on him, Little Hamster’s figure vanished. In his place stood a tall, handsome man.
Only…
Tall he was, handsome he was. Yet he did not have a stitch of clothing on him; his skin was like white jade, utterly out of place in the dim, filthy alley.
“Meow!!”
The two feral cats were terrified. They had thought he was such a small snack; why had he suddenly become so big? Realizing something was wrong, they tried to flee, but it was already too late.
The man caught each cat by the tail and lifted them in midair, considering where to start biting. In the man’s current simple and blunt logic, it went like this: they wanted to eat him, so he could eat them back. No problem.
Only, looking at the grimy feral cats, he could not bring himself to bite. After a brief hesitation, he gave up on the idea of eating and instead plucked both cats bald.
When the cats had scampered off, the man lowered his head to look at his naked body. He hesitated, then raised his right hand and made a tentative slash to the right.
In an instant, a rift infused with spatial power split open. The man reached in, rummaged, and pulled out his original bloodstained clothes.
He stared at the tangled bundle and fell into a dilemma.
[How do I wear this?]
After studying it for quite a while, the man still had no clue. In the end, the one who walked out of the alley was not a man, but a Little Hamster not even the size of a palm.
Little Hamster unconsciously gave the soft little tail behind him a shake. He stared at the street, dazed for a long moment, then sprinted in one direction and vanished without a trace.
