Chapter 88: Jade Token Rain
Li Yuan Ling furrowed her brows, turning to Li Mu Sheng with confusion.
“If we don’t fight them, then how else can we take their jade tokens?”
Hearing this, Li Mu Sheng simply shrugged.
“Of course, just like this.”
As soon as his words faded, their wooden boat suddenly accelerated, swiftly heading toward the heart of the lake.
At the same moment, sharp whistling sounds pierced through the darkness, echoing across the Underground Lake.
Li Yuan Ling’s eyes widened abruptly. Countless tiny shadows sped toward them from the surrounding darkness. Yet, once those shadows reached the air above their boat, they seemed to lose all strength, falling helplessly downward.
It turned into a jade token rain, clinking musically as the tokens landed upon their wooden boat, bouncing off surfaces with clear, ringing sounds.
Li Yuan Ling froze, astonished. Only when jade tokens started striking her head repeatedly did she finally snap out of her daze.
“This is heaven-sent fortune!”
She jumped up from her cushioned seat and hastily began gathering the jade tokens scattered all over the boat.
Seeing her arms quickly fill with tokens, Li Yuan Ling’s pretty face flushed brightly with excitement, making her look just like a delighted little treasure hunter.
Meanwhile, around the Underground Lake, cries of astonishment echoed from all directions.
“My jade token!”
“My jade tokens disappeared…”
“What’s going on? Why are my jade tokens suddenly flying away?”
…
A middle-aged man in a green robe had finally relaxed after steering his wooden boat far from Li Mu Sheng, following his young master’s orders. He turned respectfully toward the young master seated before him.
“Young master, please wait here on the wooden boat. I’ll go and gather more jade tokens.”
Song Zi Mo nodded slightly, but then frowned, instructing sternly:
“Next time, pay attention! Just grab the jade tokens. Stop blowing out candles on other people’s boats. I don’t want to be frightened again.”
The green-robed man’s eyelids twitched slightly, yet he immediately nodded obediently. Though it had clearly been the young master himself who instructed him to blow out candles earlier, he certainly would not dare argue back.
Right then, the man’s face suddenly changed drastically.
The three jade tokens he had carefully stored away suddenly leaped out of his robe and flew swiftly toward the darkness. He reacted swiftly, his martial Qi surging into his palm as he desperately reached out to catch them.
But the tokens were far too fast. Before he could even touch a shadow, they had vanished into the darkness.
…
On another boat not far from Li Mu Sheng, a sword-wielding middle-aged man and a burly Martial World warrior had barely managed to repel some attackers who came to seize their tokens. Just as they were about to steer their boat further away, something strange occurred.
The jade tokens they held—both their own and those just taken from attackers—suddenly tore free from their grasp. Despite their martial prowess, they had no chance to react, feeling only an invisible force pulling the jade tokens from their hands. Within the blink of an eye, the tokens vanished into the darkness.
“What just happened?”
They stared blankly at each other, confusion filling their eyes. Only as more cries of shock arose around the lake did they realize this was no isolated event.
After a stunned silence, the sword-wielding man instinctively looked toward Li Mu Sheng’s wooden boat, knowing something was special about that duo.
In the next moment, he froze completely, too shocked even to speak.
What had he just seen?
The candle flame on Li Mu Sheng’s boat flickered softly, illuminating an incredible sight: jade tokens raining from above, endlessly falling like magical drops of fortune. It seemed every token on the Underground Lake had gathered there.
“What’s wrong with you? Why do you suddenly look like you’ve seen a ghost?” asked the martial warrior beside him, puzzled.
He followed the sword-wielding man’s gaze and immediately froze as well, exclaiming involuntarily:
“This is too terrifying…”
…
Meanwhile, Li Yuan Ling, who had been joyously gathering jade tokens, now hugged a large pile to her chest and raised her head, pleading loudly toward the heavens:
“Stop, stop! I can’t pick up anymore!”
Li Mu Sheng glanced at her, then at the mountain of tokens now piled on their boat, and gently nodded.
Immediately, the whistling sounds ceased, and the rain of jade tokens finally stopped.
Li Yuan Ling sat back onto her cushioned seat, cradling her armful of tokens. She looked down at them, smiling so widely her cheeks ached.
As her laughter faded, silence gently settled around them.
After a moment, Li Yuan Ling slowly raised her head, quietly watching Li Mu Sheng. Her smile had disappeared, replaced by thoughtful contemplation.
“I never imagined you were this powerful,” she murmured softly.
As she spoke, she lifted a hand full of jade tokens, brushing away the tears that had suddenly turned her eyes red. With effort, she managed a faint smile.
“If foster mother knew how powerful you’ve become, she would be so happy.”
Then she lowered her head again, lost in her thoughts as she stared at the tokens.
Seeing her mood shift, Li Mu Sheng stayed silent a moment. Then, shaking his head gently, he said:
“Sworn younger sister, you’ve already gained so many tokens. Now isn’t the time to be sad. You must gather your spirits.”
Li Yuan Ling bit her lip slightly, wiping her eyes once more. Slowly, a small smile reappeared.
“You’re right.”
She carefully gathered the jade tokens into a neat pile and nodded, satisfied.
“If we still don’t take first place, there must be foul play in Floating Sky City.”
Li Mu Sheng nodded calmly, speaking plainly:
“I truly want that divine object. Floating Sky City better not disappoint me.”
“Huh? You just spoke, and all these jade tokens flew to you instantly. Just how high does your martial dao cultivation have to be to accomplish that?”
Li Yuan Ling waved a hand in the air, imitating the flight of the tokens, still puzzled.
“You’re already so strong—do you really still need a divine object to enhance your martial dao?”
