Chapter 23 “Underground Morgue Part 2”

This Translation is hosted on https://bcatranslation.com/

A night doctor?

They were almost face to face with the doctor, close enough to breathe against the skin even. Worse, this wasn’t the end of their interaction. Despite the dim lighting, the doctor continued to raise his arm to close the door behind himself and accidentally bumped against Dawn’s shoulder! This instantly brought the team to a freezing halt.

But then the strangest thing occurred. Instead of freaking out from touching something which shouldn’t be there due to Boink’s camouflage spell, the doc paid it no heed like he didn’t feel anything and continued along his way.

Shadow whispered first after there was some distance between them: “Stupid hamster, how come I didn’t know your spell is that effective? It can disturb a person’s physical perception as well?”

“Of course not, it just affects the vision. That doctor clearly bumped in Landlord’s shoulder, did you not see? There’s no way he wouldn’t have felt the force!” Boink ruffled his head and found the event too intense for his little heart.

Dawn ignored their conversation because he’s been focusing on the doc. There’s nothing strange about the person’s appearance, but when his sight fell upon the guy’s wrist where he saw a wristband, Dawn simply couldn’t remove his focus due to old memories surging out again.

It’s all too familiar. That wristband, it’s the same kind used on his parents when they were down here. Tied to the right hand, it’s red with black letters to confirm the corpse’s name and identity….

“Both of you stop, look at the doctor and tell me if you see anything unusual with him.” Dawn wanted to confirm his suspicion and quickly ordered the two.

“Now that you mention it Landlord… Look at the way he walks. Don’t you think it’s unnatural and stiff?” Shadow had keen eyes due to being a cat so she immediately picked up on this oddity after being told to do so, “And, the doctor likely has a disability with that leg.”

“Landlord, are you trying to say there is something wrong with the man?” Boink also picks up on the meaning.

Dawn nodded and explained what he suspects, “So is there a way for one to control the movements of a corpse?”

If there are currently two monsters running a mission with him then why not necromancy?

Sadly, this time Shadow didn’t oblige his theory and denied the speculation: “There is a method of controlling a deceased person, but that method requires the target to be dead. I can hear the doctor’s heartbeat still so it can’t be it.”

They were nearly able to make skin contact earlier. If the catling says she could hear the guy’s heartbeat, then there’s no question about it. For necromancy, a moving corpse was still a corpse. There’s no life in a hunk of flesh. As for puppet magic used by wizards at times, that’s also out of the question since it would mean the subject would be oozing with magical energy. Besides, whether it be wizards or necromancers, neither profession could revive the dead.

Dawn’s expression flushed red after getting his own hope squashed. It’s the first time he came close to gloating, but instead of being the hero, he became the zero in an instant.

Coughing to clear the embarrassing atmosphere, “Ahumph, let’s keep moving then since we don’t know. It will be troublesome if the night doctor returns before we can find any clues.”

Boink couldn’t resist muttering a complaint after that, “We’ve come all this way already, if that person still won’t show up then they must have a weird fetish or something. Who would want to live in a morgue anyway?”

Indeed, who would want to live in a morgue anyways? Shadow couldn’t agree with this idea any more than what was said. In her opinion, it’s absolutely foul inside the room that they entered. She had the keenest smell of the three, meaning the odor of dead bodies got magnified for her nose. Out of reflex, she jerked backward upon entry before scanning the room.

Inside, there are four empty trolleys used to carry bodies around, then came the cabinets aligning the walls. All of these containers were closed, except one in the corner that were pulled out with the yellow bag zipped open.
