Chapter 11 “The Devil’s Knight”
Rolynn didn’t go too far that evening. Instead, she spent the night wandering around the area just outside of town like a loss aimless kitty. She really didn’t know what to do. Her companions wanted to leave this shithole to avoid further trouble, but she’s not so sure anymore about continuing her life like this.
Holding her knees in a seated position atop of a small peak, she stares off into the starry night at the moon.
Du Wei continued with his journey as he said the following morning. Unlike before though, there’s an ox drawn cart following behind their group, and inside was the magician from yesterday bounded by heavy ropes. The poor guy, he looked absolutely exhausted from how soaked he was. Following Du Wei’s order from the previous day, the knights been giving the magician a nice cold bath every once in a while without break.
As usual, the boy kept up with his routine and started reading inside the carriage again once they were on the road. Considering the quality of his carriage, vibrations weren’t an issue even on bumpy roads like these. But very soon, he was interrupted by another reason.
Following a light knock on the window, Marde’s voice could be heard: “Master, there’s something you need to see. Those adventurers from the tavern yesterday are following behind us.”
Startled for a moment, Du Wei immediately stuck his head out the window at the indicated direction. Indeed, the haughty girl and her two companions were following behind them from a distance.
Yesterday that girl only spent a night with the young lord and now she’s following him huh. The knights were all showing weird faces like they’re trying to hold in their laughter.
“Stop the carriage. Go and fetch that girl,” Du Wei orders.
Rolynn’s been following the kid’s party for the entire morning because her head’s in utter chaos. She didn’t know why, she just wanted to keep following the boy. Obviously it’s not for the sake of the mage’s safety or wellbeing, rather it’s something more…. What’s the word, fate was calling her!
Then just as her mind was preoccupied with the pointless wonderings, two of the knights further ahead had rode over to bring her attention back to par.
“Miss, our lord wishes to see you, please come with us.” Due to the possibility of this girl having a relation with the kid, the knights made sure their words were polite and unoffensive.
Rolynn was in a daze still by then. Giving a nod, she allowed herself to be led over without a second thought.
“Why are you following me?” Du Wei didn’t get off his carriage when asking. Instead, he only opened the door to confront the girl.
Why? I don’t even know, perhaps it’s that devilish smile? Rolynn didn’t have the answer either. Even so, she knew what her next course of action must be.
Taking a deep breath, the haughty girl promptly got on her knees with her head lowered: “I, Rolynn Muen, pledge loyalty to you. I am willing to become your most loyal subordinate and follower. I will use my blood and my life to uphold my pledge to you for the rest of my life! Will you accept my loyalty?”
Du Wei didn’t speak for a while. Instead, he began inspecting the girl and said: “You want to pledge loyalty to me, why?”
“I don’t know,” Rolynn merely said what’s in her heart. “Maybe you are right. I am tired, tired of the uncertainty in my life and the inability to maintain what’s mine. Perhaps… I need someone to depend upon.”
“And you think I’m that person?”
“Yes. Even though I don’t know your identity yet, but you give me the feeling of… of someone extraordinary. You are destined to become an extraordinary person.”
“Oh, now that’s troubling.” Giving a sigh, Du Wei then turned to his personal assistant: “Marde, I’m having trouble remembering so mind enlightening me? As a noble, I am entitled to having my own honorary knights am I right? How many of those can I recruit?”
Although Marde was nothing but a stable hand up until the boy came along, he did do his homework afterwards. “Yes milord. According to the laws of the Empire, you are entitled to receive the title of Baron after your father the Earl even if you don’t inherit his title. For such a status, ten would be your limit.”
“Thank you Marde. Only ten eh? It’s a bit low for my taste, but knights can also recruit squires am I correct? If I include the squires for each of my knights then that’s not too bad.”
Returning his attention back to the female adventurer after getting confirmation: “Alright, I accept your oath of submission. From now on you are my honorary knight Rolynn and the first to receive such a title from me.”
“Th-thank you… Now that I’ve pledged my loyalty to you, forgive me milord, but I still don’t know your background. Would I be privy to knowing your identity?”
“Oh how silly of me. My identity eh? Very well, I am the Empire’s Vice General, Earl Raymond’s eldest son, Du Wei Rowling. Also, I forgot to tell you something as well. I have a rather infamous nickname back over at the capital, they like to call me the ‘Retard’.”
“Re-e-tard?!” Rolynn popped her eyes in utter shock.
What the hell? If this kid is a retard then there are no geniuses left in this world!
Rolynn wouldn’t dare to laugh in this case though, it’s too ridiculous. Instead, the girl only got up from the spot and pointed to her other companions: “Milord, these are my companions. Their names are….”
“No, no, no,” Du Wei cuts her off. “Forgive my rudeness but I am not interested in their names. As you’ve heard, I’m only allowed to have ten honorary knights so I’m not going to waste those slots. I can’t be handing them out whenever someone asks me, I’m saving them for a few high-level knights or swordsmen.” He didn’t even bother to examine the other two fellas who were clearly disappointed by his statement.
Don’t joke around! That bulky warrior only had brute strength, and that archer… a few hundred gold pieces would be enough to recruit four to five of similar caliber. Even this female knight. If she wasn’t such a fine lass with those sexy long legs superior to even the models of his old world, Du Wei wouldn’t even bother to give her a chance given her level.
“Knight Rolynn Muen, now that you are my honorary knight, your companions can count as your squires then. About your knightly badge and equipment, I will give them to you when we arrive at our destination. Now lead your people and join our group. If nothing goes wrong then we will arrive at our destination tonight.”
There were really only three ways to become a true knight in this world. One was to be skilled enough to be evaluated by the “Knights Association”. Second way was to be a believer of the Temple of Light. At a young age, children with enough inherent talent would be raised and trained within the main cathedral said religion. Then passing a series of assessments, these devote followers would then go off to join the sacred order of Holy Knights belonging to the Temple. The last method, likely the easiest version, was to pledge loyalty to a noble and obtain the Honorary Knight title since it only depended upon the Lord’s mood and required nothing else.
These two guys – archer and warrior – were weak and not part of the Holy Knights order, therefore, their only chance of becoming a knight was likely to be recruited by a noble. But then what noble would want such weaklings when they could easily acquire better men into their service?
Rolynn wanted to do something for her companions. Sadly, she knew reality was a harsh thing and its likely the opportunity would never present itself again. As such, the only thing she could say were a few comforting words, not only to the two, but to herself as well.
Her emotions were honestly tied inside. Once her loyalty was pledged then she’s no longer independent, meaning this party in which she spent so much time and effort to maintain would break apart and become someone else’s.
What she didn’t know though at this time was that many, many years later, the people of this world would hail this day as a major important event!
The reason?
It’s because the first member of the legendary “Demon Knight Regiment” was born on this day, and her name was Rolynn Muen, a woman!
