Law of the devil chapter 06

Chapter 6 “Restless Heart”

Crimson red in its hue, the sky looked like it’s burning this evening as the lonely carriage transverse along the common road. It’s destination, the province of Kurt.

This was by no means an ordinary vehicle though. Crafted out of the highest-grade material out there, it’s practically lavishing in terms of quality. Furthermore, the emblem engraved along the doors only emphasized its noble status – an iris flower wrapped around two crossing swords, then adorned by a crown at the top of the hilts and engulfed in flames. What the symbol signifies was the occupant held a blood relation with the royal family, meaning it’s a high noble.

Then again, anyone would realize this from afar based on how threatening the two dozen knights were in charge of escorting the vehicle along its path. Flanked from back and end, it’s the usual lineup with one peculiar difference, these men are dispirited in light of their shiny new armors.

As for the sole individual not in armor, the driver that’s known as Marde, this personal attendant of Du Wei’s didn’t appear any different from his usual self. In fact, he’s rather frank and free to be able to drive a horse again.

“Young Master Du Wei, should we find a place to rest? The light is starting to lose itself in the sky.” the servant asks after knocking on the window behind himself.

“Mhmm, let’s do that.”

Perhaps its coincidence, or the thoughts were the same among the knights, but the head of the pack had returned from the front with news following that confirmation.

“Milord, there’s a town up ahead. We will likely have to make it our place of rest tonight less we continue through the night,” the knight reports.

Taking the lead to answer instead, Marde responds in the boy’s stead: “Master Du Wei’s order, we will rest at the next township so let everyone know.”

There were only twenty knights whom followed Du Wei out from the imperial city. Normally this would be fine for the usual outing, but this was the eldest son of a high noble house returning to his family’s territory. To call this shabby was not an understatement at all. In fact, it’s downright degrading for its common to have many more just for a picnic if maids and such were included. But here? Twenty knights and a former horse groomer….

Sadly, it came as no surprise to Du Wei at all. He knew he’s lost the right to inherit the position from his father so these knights are doomed to the same fate as he. So, that could only mean these twenty men are also disliked by their peers, otherwise such an assignment wouldn’t have befallen them. But then again, others business was of no matter to himself. Du Wei was rather frank to be rid of his father’s rule.

As usual, he’s been indulging himself in the books during the ride until the sight of the nearby settlement came into view.

Giant Wood Village, the only settlement within a hundred miles of the area. It got its name because of the lumber industry around here and was home to several hundred families. It’s not exactly a small place but neither was it a big one, nevertheless, the only place of rest was the one tavern it held in the village. Naturally the tavern’s business was good since it held a monopoly, adding in the cheap food and cheap whores…. Well, even the lower class needs entertainment, right?

“Oh? What’s a noble doing here of all places?”

An entourage of armored knights and a carriage adorned with the crest of a high noble, it’s only to be expected for Du Wei and his group to draw attention themselves.

“Owner, I think you should put away the chairs they are about to sit on. Maybe you can sell it for a high price later, haha!” The quiet murmuring didn’t last long of course.

These patrons are a rough bunch, they aren’t going to restrain themselves just for someone of high status. Even so, Du Wei didn’t mind it, he only wants to have a taste of the alcohol here now that he’s free from the restraints of home.

But calm wasn’t meant to be for this small little establishment it seems. Out of the blue, another group has arrived at the tavern just when things were returning to the usual rowdy scene – three men and a girl. Based on their wary expressions upon entry and inexpensive attires, these four are obviously not locals. Likely foreigners traveling through the road like Du Wei and his group.

For a minute, the tavern fell into silence again, not for anything special, merely to goggle their eyes at that haughty looking girl with the slender long legs. Considering her face and beautiful appearance, she’s likely around only eighteen to nineteen years of age. Matched that with the short skirt to emphasize the legs, any decent man with a boner would want to have a swing at the lady. However, the dangerous gleam from the dagger and scimitar hanging off of her waist signaled she was no pushover like any dainty maiden around the block.

Then there’s the girl’s companions as well. First the bulky one. Heavily armored with a large shield, one could tell he’s the strength type. As for the tall and slender one with the longbow over the shoulder, its obvious he’s the archer of the party with that bow ring around the fingers. Now lastly, and the one Du Wei was most interested in, had a common looking face found anywhere along the streets. However, there’s one particular feature that caught his eyes the most, it was the silver leaf crest clipped to his chest area of the coat.

People in this countryside may not recognize what this signified but Du Wei definitely did. A one leaf emblem denoted the status of a mage! Or more specifically, a level one magician, just slightly above a magic apprentice. Even so, that’s a genuine one with recognition from the Magic Union!
